Job Purpose
Reporting to the Area Manager of the Small Development Business Center (SBDC), the Business Consultant provides counseling and delivers programs to individuals, businesses, communities, organizations and other public agencies in the geographic territory, which includes Florence and surrounding counties.
Job Summary
- Consults and counsels prospective and existing business owners in all areas of business to encourage business growth and prepare them to apply for business funding.
- Conducts limited research to provide businesses with sources of information on taxes, regulations, finance and labor markets, funding sources, etc.
- Follows the South Carolina SBDC Strategic Plan to achieve personal goals for key performance indicators and provides reports on those indicators through the Neoserra database.
- Participates in weekly staff meetings and office responsibilities, working effectively without direct supervision.
- Advocates for SBDC programs through public relation activities in the designated territory, as approved by supervisor.
- Maintains good working relationships with relevant agencies and community stakeholders.
- Assists in identifying and cultivating private- and public-sector management and capital resources to assist in economic development efforts.
- Completes 30 hours of professional development activities annually and remains current on best practices and industry trends.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business or related field and relevant experience. (High school diploma and four years of relevant experience may be considered.)
Preferred Qualifications
Economic development and sales or consulting experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary
Knowledge of basic business tools, including financial analysis, research, marketing and accounting. Ability to represent the SBDC professionally at functions/events; speak in public and one-on-one with diverse constituent groups; think creatively to solve constituent problems; effectively manage multiple projects and clients simultaneously; and travel to multiple counties. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
