Mission
The Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) is a social enterprise non‐profit 501(c)(3) organization that unites executives and inmates through entrepreneurial passion and servant leadership to transform lives, restore families, and rebuild communities.
About PEP
Since our 2004 founding, PEP has been a pioneering disrupter in building and efficiently delivering a pre‐ and post‐release experience to our participants that produces deep life transformation and manifests in a major reduction in Texas’s 3‐year recidivism rate combined with a history of rapid employment, strong wage gains and successful business startup rates for economic mobility. Over two decades, our strong data set confirms that when our graduates move out of prison and into the growing PEP community, they are successful.
We believe their flourishing is the reliable effect of PEP’s time‐tested transformation process, what we call our experiential theory of change. Our model combines cycle‐breaking education, character instruction, life‐giving encouragement from successful executive volunteers and holistic re‐entry services to maximize self‐sufficiency and transform broken lives.
PEP has graduated more than 3,100 inmates (who have started 600+ businesses), maintained a 100% employment rate within 90 days of release, and achieved a 3‐year recidivism rate of less than 10%. An independent study by Harvard’s ICIC showed that PEP makes an annual $122M GDP impact in Texas, resulting in $4.3M total State and Federal tax savings to deliver a 794% 5‐year return on investment of charitable gifts.
