Position Overview

The Associate Dean of Students, under the direction of the Assistant Principal for Instructional Practices and Student Care, works collaboratively to foster the character formation and social/moral development of each O'Dowd High School student. The Dean is responsible for school safety, student discipline, and attendance. They maintain student records for attendance, tardiness, health, and discipline and serve as the liaison to the surrounding community and other schools concerning off-campus safety, behavior, and other student-life matters. Evening and weekend work is required. This is a full-time, 11-month, exempt position.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with organizational policies, and applicable laws.
  • Receives referrals and confers with students, parents, and teachers; responds to and resolves parent and student concerns and complaints
  • Supervises students on campus and monitors students during arrival & departure, lunch, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines
  • Creates, implements, and maintains systems for collecting and tracking data on school culture metrics, including suspensions and staff /student attendance
  • Oversees behavioral interventions, including family meetings, mediations, suspensions, and expulsion hearings
  • Implements and follows policies and procedures for student dress code, discipline, and other policies related to maintaining a positive school culture of learning and achievement
  • Promote a culture of reverence, respect, and responsibility among students in line with our charism and values.
  • Oversee the daily day-to-day management of Students. The daily routine includes oversight of the dress code, tracking absences, and tardies, detention, recording of discipline items in PowerSchool, etc.
  • Oversee student supervision during non-class time, including breaks, lunches, and before and after classes.
  • Coordinate supervision of co-curricular events. Work closely with school administration to coordinate coverage of student events.
  • Chaperone student dances and other large student events as needed.
  • Enforce the rules and regulations from the Student Family Handbook.
  • Meet with students regarding behavior and discipline; follows up with parents, teachers, and counselors; determine and implement appropriate consequences; monitor behavior and wellness contracts.
  • Support teachers with classroom management and discipline.
  • Notify relevant parties in matters regarding suspension or probation. Consult with administration regarding expulsions.
  • Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of the school discipline system.
  • Distribute and track student parking permits; handle student driving-related matters.
  • Assist Emergency Plan Coordinator with evacuation and lockdown drills.
  • Conduct an annual review and revision of the Student Family Handbook.
  • Exercise good judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action(s).
  • Respond to immediate crisis situations under the direction and with the support of the Dean of Students.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Schoology and PowerSchool
  • Experience with Restorative justice and/or practices


Qualifications for this position

  • Bachelor's degree and/or related education or experience applicable to the responsibilities of the position is required (MS Degree or equivalent experience preferred)
  • Administrative credential or equivalent preferred
  • Proven success working with parents/guardians and teachers
  • Evidenced knowledge of and experience in discipline and/or restorative practices
  • Proven success in collaborating with colleagues and innovating practices

Work Environment and Physical Requirements


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and use both close and distant vision. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to fingers, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit, stoop, kneel, lift and occasionally move up to 20 pounds. The ability to work in a highly active office dealing with a variety of challenges, multiple deadlines, and a diverse array of contacts. Ability to safely and comfortably travel around a 20+ acre campus. This job operates in a professional office environment. Time is spent using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and copier and fax machines.


Expected Hours of Work - Work hours typically are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (may include evenings and/or weekends as necessary).
