POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary roles and responsibilities for this position is responsible for working with the Superintendent in managing day-to-day construction contract requirements for heavy civil railroad construction projects. Lead a team in the absence of the Superintendent for the coordination of operations according to priorities and plans and oversee workers at construction sites as directed by Superintendent. Allocate general and daily responsibilities to field crew.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Effectively manage and direct all employees within each project for daily work assignments, respond to employee questions or problem solve, and communicate expectations.
- Communicate daily work activities including appropriate safety requirements. Bring forth a safety-first approach to ensure appropriate practices are in place.
- Collaborate and communicate with managers, supervisors, team members and customers with a positive, constructive approach that addresses concerns, resolves problems, and is proactive, not reactive.
- Lead by example, have a professional demeanor and create a positive work environment with a focus on relationship building to create trust and respect among all.
DAILY OVERSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor field crews to ensure that project operations flow and there is continued progress, provide updates to management and respond to questions from field crews, Superintendents and management.
- Responsible for relaying new information to field crew that may include changes to project work assignments, carry out daily required inspections, provide support to Superintendent, and at time may need to work side-by-side with workers to assist with work and/or demonstrate techniques to assist or help out worker(s).
- May be required to assist in the hiring process, create worker schedules, communicate instructions, train new employees, and assist with worker-related concerns such as payroll questions.
- Inspect construction sites frequently and supervise the site work and use of machinery and equipment.
- Ensure that all employees know and adhere to safety rules and guidelines, such as wearing hard hats, safety glasses, and other PPE.
- Develop skills, encourage learning, and foster efficiency as well as productivity within the entire field crew. Relay any new information and provide training or coaching as needed.
- Identify and resolve problems that may arise during construction process.
- Bring upbeat energy to create an environment of among positive morale among all workers.
- Provide backup support to the Superintendent in his absence.
- Other duties, tasks, and responsibilities that may be assigned at any time.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 5-7 years of experience in the construction industry with exposure to heavy equipment operation, knowledge of roadway and railroad construction, can read and interpret project plans, and understands all regulatory safety requirements and guidelines.
- Excellent supervisory skills to manage, direct, and provide guidance to assigned field crew.
- Good planning and organizational skills to continually assess resource needs for each project, set priorities, and provide updates or implement changes to complete project in a timely manner.
- Ability to move from one task to another seamlessly and meet demands requiring adapting and change within a constantly changing environment.
- Attention to detail and good time management skills.
- Collaborative approach to bring together team and field project for effective results.
- Ability to schedule and track progress of project and assess ways to continue progress and change course as needed.
- Must have valid Class C driver's license.
- Must be able to travel 75-100% of the time.
- Intermediate computer skills that include MS Outlook Email, specialized software (ProCore) navigation, and use of tablets.
Safety Responsibilities:
- Safety protocols are extremely important to follow.
- Follow all safety training and procedures displaying clear understanding through demonstration of safe work practices.
- Refer to and comply with instructions, requests, orders, and information posted within bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulatory guidance/manuals.
- Must be able to complete and pass requirements for background check and drug screening.
- Ability to obtain eRailSafe badge approval required.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Position reports to the Superintendent and is expected to operate under moderate supervisory involvement, depending on the task and the incumbent's knowledge and ability to complete the task. All other staff remain available for information, advice, guidance, or assistance if needed and may provide training, coaching, and feedback as appropriate. This position supervises up to 10 employees depending on managerial needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The Assistant Superintendent will frequently stand, walk, climb, and move throughout the workday, use their hands, repeat the same movements, and bend or twist their body while handling products and conducting work. Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. Frequently move objects up to 65 lbs. Exposed to loud noise with possible exposure to live tracks and trains as well as high voltage areas.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical environment requires the employee to work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. This position works in a very manual work environment.
