Statement of the Job:

The School of Food and Agriculture at the University of Maine seeks applicants for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in the program area of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (AVS). The candidate will teach and advise in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and establish an independent, externally funded research program. This is a 50% research and 50% teaching position. Responsibilities will include research, teaching, student advising, and providing expertise to the state and UMaine community in the areas of Animal and Veterinary Science. The position carries an expectation to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the University and the discipline.

 

We expect the successful candidate to teach classes required for the B.S. in Animal Sciences, including the pre-veterinary concentration. Initial teaching responsibilities could include Animal Diseases; Physiology of Reproduction; and Equine Management courses. Graduate supervision is an important part of this position. Participation in undergraduate student recruiting efforts is also expected.

 

The candidate will conduct research to support innovation in animal science, with a wide range of expertise encouraged such as research in the areas of animal treatment and welfare, animal physiology, climate and/or environmental contaminant (e.g., PFAS) impacts on animal health and production, diseases of domestic animals, etc. The position has a 50% research appointment in Animal and Veterinary Sciences, including an appointment in the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station (MAFES). The candidate will provide research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The J. Franklin Witter Teaching and Research Center is located adjacent to the Orono Campus and has a resident dairy and equine herd for teaching and research purposes. These facilities could also support research in beef, sheep, poultry, and swine. The UMaine Orono campus has an AAALAC accredited small animal research facility. There are also opportunities for engagement in the UMaine Initiative of One Health and the Environment.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • DVM/Ph.D. or Ph.D in Animal or Veterinary Science, or a closely related field 
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach in the field of discipline at undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Strong record or promise of scholarship, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and extramural research funding
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor students
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline and institution

Preferred:

  • Clinical veterinary experience and/or post-doctoral research experience
  • Record or promise of high professional and institutional service and leadership capacity
