Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.
POSITION SUMMARY
Roof Above is a leading provider of permanent supportive housing, rapid re-housing and Shared Housing for individuals who are experiencing homelessness in the Mecklenburg area. Our Shared Housing programs serve individuals who will end their homeless situation through employment income and individuals who are elderly and/or disabled and in of need housing placements while they await their permanent housing subsidy. Our MeckHOME and LINK programs have been community innovators in using a shared (roommate) housing model since 2020.
The Assistant Director of Shared Housing is responsible for oversight of case management services and will assist the Director with overall program leadership. The Assistant Director is responsible for fostering and upholding a program culture that is aligned with Housing First and with Roof Above’s mission and values.
This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Director of Shared Housing
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensures a high standard of service delivery, with the overall goal of helping each tenant successfully transition to housing and remain stably housed.
- Provide clinical direction and leadership to the program, utilizing a “Housing First” model and harm reduction approach
- Coordinate with community providers around resources available to program participants
- Work with Shared Housing Director on managing program referrals and participant exits
- Innovate and partner with other agencies around employment opportunities to maintain or increase tenant’s income
- Ensure subsidized housing waitlists are appropriately monitored and responses are completed in a timely manner
- Ensure that all required grant and contract trainings are attended by relevant staff
- Work with case management staff and grant administrator to ensure that grant or contract file requirements are meeting funder standards
- Partner with Shared Housing Director regarding program planning and decision-making
- Manage budget for multiple grants; ensure that number of proposed people housed and funds expended is accomplished during grant year
- Provide weekly clinical supervision to the case management team and facilitate team meetings
- Work with our housing specialist and community partners, including landlords and realtors, to identify prospective new apartment resources
- Working with staff to mediate roommate or landlord issues; provide clinical or program support to tenants as needed
- Ensure compliance with Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) requirements; Complete relevant HMIS reports in an accurate and timely manner
- Review electronic case records and audit clinical charts to ensure the highest level of program data quality
- Ensure regular inspection and maintenance of all apartments; Work with staff to address that housing issues, including rent arrears, are resolved in a timely manner
- Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or an analogous field preferred
- Substantial previous experience working with individuals living with mental illness, substance use disorder, or co-occurring diagnosis
- Prior experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness; Prior experience implementing housing first programs preferred
- Minimum of 2 - 4 years’ supervisory experience
- Superior oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
- Computer proficiency; Experience with HMIS database a plus
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Individuals must be able to work with limited supervision, embrace a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable de-escalating negative behaviors with diverse individuals including persons with mental illness and substance use issues.
The Assistant Director of Shared Housing must be able to work a flexible scheduling, with occasional evening and the weekend hours.
