POSITION DETAILS

The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is a vibrant, pluralistic learning community committed to students’ intellectual and personal growth. Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) supports motivated students earn an associate's degree within three years. The program emphasizes enriched academic, financial, and personal support, including comprehensive and personalized advisement, career development, academic support services, scholarships, MTA MetroCards, and textbook support. Reporting to the Associate Director, the academic advisor is responsible for the retention and degree completion of a student caseload. Day and Evening-Weekend Positions are available . In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the CUNY Title Overview, the advisor:

  • Provides holistic academic advising and mentoring to a caseload of 150 students, including but not limited to assisting them with course selection, academic and financial aid appeals, goal setting, academic major selection, and degree mapping
  • Supports the program's recruitment goals by participating in information sessions, call campaigns and assisting in the registration of prospective students
  • Regularly performs degree evaluation and updates academic plans to ensure students complete their degree within three years
  • Connects students to campus resources and work closely with the ASAP Career Specialist to ensure the completion of career development requirements
  • Facilitates and develops content for group advisement sessions and student enrichment workshops
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of student activities, compliance, and challenges
  • Tracks and monitors student academic progress
  • Collaborates with other ASAP teams to address student needs and concerns
  • Ensure that students are compliant with all ASAP program requirements
  • Is responsible for all other duties assigned

Day Advisors work a traditional Monday – Friday schedule with one late night during the academic semesters (September - December and February – May)

Evening and WeekendAdvisors work Tuesday – Friday from 11 am – 7 pm and Saturday from 10 am – 6 pm during the academic semesters (September - December and February – May)

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience. The preferred candidate will have:

  • Prior experience with student caseload management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators
  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills
  • Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed
  • Understanding of Financial Aid implications on advisement

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience using CUNYfirst is a plus.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) helps students earn their college degree as quickly as possible, by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that many students confront. Key ASAP program features include a consolidated block schedule, cohorts by major, required full-time study and comprehensive advisement and career development services. Financial incentives include tuition waivers for financial aid eligible students, yearly textbook vouchers, and MetroCards for all students. Further information is available at www.cuny.edu/ASAP.

The ASAP Advisor is a member of an integrated College team providing individual academic, career and related support to an assigned group of college students as they progress through the program.

  • Delivers comprehensive advisement support services to an assigned group of students through degree completion
  • Conducts workshops and group advisement on topics of relevance and interest
  • Reviews student progress and tracks student use of academic support services
  • Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success
  • Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs
  • Supports annual recruitment of students
  • Organizes periodic special events and programs for students, faculty and staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
