Department Summary

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.
The College of Arts and Sciences has nearly 50 departments and programs, spanning the Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences, and comprises about two-thirds of all faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate majors on campus.

Position Summary

At the University of Oregon, Academic and Career Advisors collaborate with students to help them achieve their personal goals, academic potential, and professional success. Our coordinated approach to advising strives to be student-centered, caring, holistic, inclusive, and culturally aware.
Under the direction of the College and Career Advising Senior Director, Advisors in Tykeson Hall will provide integrated Academic and Career advising, services, and activities to assist students with Academic and/or career planning.
Tykeson Advisors are cross-trained to advise students at various stages in their academic journey from an integrated first-year experience to major and Career exploration and selection. Advisors are focused on ensuring student success, retention, and completion. Advisors use tools and resources to gain general knowledge of UO majors. However, each Advisor specializes in a cluster of like-majors and is knowledgeable about referral options for advising in other departments and accessing student resources.
Advisors will help students develop Academic and Career plans and goals, and leverage available resources to achieve academic success. They work in a fast-paced, drop-in, and appointment-based office setting delivering advising services on a year-round basis in both one-on-one and group settings.
Advisors must be able to work with first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. They must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty.
Advisors must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree.
Two years' experience in a high school, college, university, counseling or similar setting providing academic advising, advising support, student services, career counseling, or counseling.

Professional Competencies

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders and build partnerships.
A broad working knowledge of student development principles.
Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first-generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks.
Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations.
Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar). Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

A master's degree in education, counseling, student services/student affairs, student development, higher education leadership, or a related field.
Knowledge of university systems and structures.
