About us
The Deschutes River Alliance is a science-based advocacy organization seeking collaborative solutions to the threats facing the Wild and Scenic Deschutes River and its tributaries. We advocate for cooler, cleaner water, a healthy ecosystem, and the recovery and protection of robust populations of resident and anadromous fish. We use the data and analysis from our scientific research to effectively advocate for solutions to the critically important issues facing the Deschutes Basin. .
Science
· Participate in all aspects of the organization’s scientific research and analysis;
· With the DRA Science Team, develop and implement annual science work plan;
· Review and summarize information from agency and other Water Quality reports;
· Writing (in partnership with other DRA personnel) Water Quality and other reports;
· Research studies and other applicable documentation that may relate to the issues facing the lower Deschutes River;
· Supervising any volunteers, contractors, or employees engaged in scientific research or analysis on behalf of DRA
· Calibration, placement, and monitoring of Water Quality instruments;
· Maintain professional relationships with private landowners allowing access to their property for data collection
Administrative
- Assist with various administrative duties as time allows and as deemed necessary by the Executive Director;
- Assist with writing and editing DRA promotional materials, blog posts, and website material;
- Assist with DRA promotional events, including our annual auction, as deemed necessary by the Executive Director; and
- Represent the organization through tabling or through presentations at flyfishing or other events.
Qualifications and experience:
· Technical training and experience with operating sensitive instruments with the ability to perform required maintenance
· Experience with Excel and R or similar programs to produce tables and graphs of research data
· Ability to follow technical manuals and procedural steps
· Ability to obtain, document, record, and interpret scientific data
· Ability to clearly summarize data in technical reports and in non-technical documents for public education and outreach
· Willingness to self-educate, research, and watch informational videos / tutorials regarding the use of scientific equipment and information regarding biological pathways of aquatic plants and animals
· Interact with the public in a professional manner to present, explain, and discuss scientific findings and observations
· Ability to ask for help and clarification when needed
· Demonstrate self-discipline and appropriately manage time and work-scheduling while working from home (if not based in Portland)
· Course work in aquatic sciences and some experience working in stream and river or other aquatic environments
An ideal candidate would:
· Possess (or be in the final stages of completing) a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field such as: biology / chemistry / natural resources
· Have a basic understanding of Water Quality and the parameters related to healthy river systems
· Be comfortable with expanding knowledge on the ecology of aquatic environments including but not limited to algae/diatoms, fish, parasites, aquatic insects, and Water Quality parameters and the factors that affect them
· Have experience with and (hopefully appreciate) riverine environments
· Show passion and enthusiasm for river shed health and its conservation
· Have the ability to interact with a diversity of individuals with a variety of political and educational backgrounds
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $55,000.00 per year
