The Volunteer Services Coordinator will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society, maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve an important level of confidentiality.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the recruitment and onboarding of new volunteers, including orientation, training, and recognition.
- Support and coordinate the development of volunteer recruitment plan.
- Assist with recruitment, check-in and placement for special events including early morning and evening shifts.
- Represent Detroit Zoological Society at community engagement events.
- Maintain Volunteer Database
- Coordinate and schedule volunteer requests
- Partner with Volunteer Services Manager and Assistant Manager to ensure department coverage.
- Coordinate volunteer activities including verification of critical staffed volunteer positions.
- Attend assigned operational and department meetings.
- Staff liaison with education to coordinate education programs including Volunteens, tours, and other educational activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Non-Profit Leadership, Human Resources, Communications,
- Public Relations or related field.
- Experience as a volunteer or coordinating volunteers.
- Must be available for weekday, weekend, and evening shifts; irregular hours required.
- Working knowledge of Google Suite, Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint
- Internet proficiency.
- Excellent organizational, leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work in a timely manner.
- Ability to interact with various age groups in a professional manner.
- Experience with volunteer administration is preferred.
- Experience with event planning is beneficial.
Working Conditions
The Detroit Zoological Society is open seven days a week. Regular work schedule includes evenings and weekends. Occasional early mornings are required. The work environment is generally comfortable and most work is indoors although the position requires work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for special events and various regular activities of the Volunteer Services department.
Physical Requirements
This position requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping for extended periods, lifting and moving up to 20 pounds, and using standard office equipment and the computer.
