Job description

Redfin seeks a Vice President of its business of referring home buyers and sellers to partner agents, reporting to Redfin's chief growth officer. This business handles about half of the requests for real estate service that come in from users on Redfin.com, and today it generates about $40-million a year in gross profits. You'll be responsible for structuring a two-sided marketplace so that consumers get the service they want from the best real estate agents, and real estate agents get to connect with and serve the consumers they need to be successful. Redfin's mission is to reinvent real estate in the consumer's favor, so you'll need to think big about how to use technology to change the game for home buyers and sellers, but real estate agents are the paying customers, and you'll need to serve them well to build a profitable business.
The Opportunity: Matching 50 Million Visitors With Agents
Redfin.com has 50 million monthly unique visitors, and many of them request service from a real estate agent, for example in the form of a home tour or a listing consultation. About half of these requests go to Redfin's in-house brokerage and its employee-agents, but that can't scale the way a digital marketplace can, so the other half of the requests go to our Partner Business's network of third-party agents. These agents then pay us a percentage of the sale price when they close a transaction from this demand. We see a lot of upside in this business, and we're looking to hire an executive to take full advantage of that. The immediate opportunity is generating more revenue through better execution: operating a network of partner agents who close more real estate deals. But the bigger prize will come from larger decisions about the products we offer partner agents and how we charge for them.
An Operator Who Can Think Big
First and foremost you'll be a hands-on operator who can make a complex business hum. You'll have a network of thousands of real estate agents providing service to home buyers and sellers daily, and making sure that this network is tuned to pair up the best customers with the best agents is crucial. You'll also be a big thinker, however-someone who can make bold decisions that position this network to reinvent the industry. For example, you'll decide whether we should shift to collecting payment from partners up-front or whether we should continue to collect it at close. You'll decide whether we should match up home buyers with agents who will give a tour on any home, or whether we should match up home buyers with the agents who put up the listings. You'll collaborate with the leader of our brokerage business to decide on a framework for which demand goes to the brokerage agents and which demand goes to partner agents. Getting these decisions right will be what makes this business win in the long run.
Eyes On the Prize
You'll be a hungry executive who relentlessly pursues the prize of how the Partner Business can increase Redfin's profitability. As a company with an in-house brokerage where the real estate agents are employees, many people have jobs that involve making the brokerage business successful. You'll be the executive who channels what Redfin can gain by making the Partner Business more successful. You'll have the support of the CEO and the other senior executives in this, but you'll bring strong, well-informed opinions that inspire your team and other executives.
Who You Are

  • Operator: you have a track record of rapidly growing revenue from digital businesses that sell demand to salespeople or small businesses. You're an expert at using tools like P&Ls, customer meetings, and conversations with frontline employees to quickly make decisions that have a business impact.
  • Big thinker: you aim to make any business you own wildly successful, and you follow the logic of what needs to happen for that wherever it goes. You're ambitious for the company you work for and the contribution your business can make. You've been the smaller player before and have won.
  • Builder of superstar teams: you've built superstar teams by hiring the best people, growing the careers of overperformers, and addressing underperformance quickly. You've drawn on a wide range of talent, including people historically underrepresented in tech businesses.
  • Honorable: on any decision that's a moral decision, you do the right thing. You tell the truth every time, even when it's awkward. You've used this to build deep trust with your teams and other executives.
  • Great communicator: you listen closely to others and convey your own point of view directly and clearly. You use the words that work best for your audience, whether you're talking to a frontline employee or a board member. In meetings you seek truth, not consensus.
  • Heart and soul: you love your work and bring the glow of that to those around you. You relish the grind of getting things right, but you know that what your employees need most from you is joy.

Base Pay Range: $236,000.00 - 319,000.00. Depending on the position, compensation may also include commissions, bonuses, and equity. Potential for quarterly bonuses based on company performance. Potential for merit increases and stock grants based on performance.
