The Vice President of Mission Services will, in collaboration with the CEO, lead the development of the Mission Services response to these opportunities and coordinate the organization’s priorities in service of a cohesive future strategy. This will include designing programs, responding to service and funding opportunities, and developing partnerships with community organizations and employers.
In addition, the Vice President will work with the CEO and other members of the executive team on the broader strategic goals for the organization. These include raising its public profile and generating additional funding from public and private sources, ensuring that it has the leadership and talent necessary to thrive and grow, investing in the recruitment and retention of staff, and creating effective and efficient operations. The team will also steward Goodwill’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging strategy, which aims to enhance organizational DEI competency around the issues of race, culture, age, gender and gender identity, spiritual beliefs, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and linguistic profile.
KEY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT OF MISSION SERVICES
Lead Goodwill’s Mission Services strategy.
· Capitalize on the potential for growth in the current market in order to expand service offerings and reach more individuals and communities.
· Oversee the development of new initiatives and align programs with the evolving needs of community residents as well as the requirements of government and private funders.
· Keep connected with Goodwill Industries International and assess and pursue the training and funding initiatives it offers.
· Participate as a key player in the development of the overall strategic plan for the organization.
· Lead proactively and work hand-in-hand with a far-sighted and goal-oriented CEO and with senior leadership team members, board members, and other staff.
Maintain and build upon the existing Mission Services portfolio.
· Implement the new vision for MassHire Boston Career Center articulated in the response to the RFP submitted in October 2023.
· Retool and expand the Workforce Development training programs as DTA reinstates work requirements, including determining how to serve multiple regions of the state.
· Knit together the MassHire and Workforce Development strategies and programs.
· Continue to reinforce a community-based orientation of Developmental Services including activities, work crews, and placements.
· Expand employment-oriented programming for young adults with developmental disabilities.
Cultivate critical external partnerships.
· Act as a liaison with government funding agencies, as well as nonprofit and business partners.
· Work collaboratively, as appropriate, with associations in which Goodwill is a member, including Goodwill Industries International, the Providers’ Council, and others.
· Keep abreast of shifting local and state policies, practices, and programs; support, as appropriate, Goodwill advocacy efforts.
Ensure Mission Services’ current and future fiscal health.
· Ensure new and existing programs are financially sustainable, and the Mission Services funding portfolio is managed and implemented effectively.
· Anticipate changes in funding before the need becomes critical and generate new and mission-aligned public funding and collaborate with philanthropy on private funding.
· Prepare budgets, forecasts, and reporting that reflect program growth and strategy; monitor revenue and expenses in collaboration with the CFO.
Invest in staff development and infrastructure needs.
· Foster a collaborative, healthy environment within the department and across departments. Be intentional about communication and team building and enhancing organizational collaboration and cohesion.
· Leverage existing participant/client data management systems to improve programs and outcomes and develop plans to upgrade systems when necessary and appropriate.
· Provide helpful solutions to programmatic, business, and administrative challenges and ensure that Mission Services staff are supported by the systems and processes they need to succeed.
· Enhance workflow and collaboration within Mission Services and between Mission Services and other departments.
Strengthen Mission Services’ culture around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
· Foster the internal culture that celebrates DEI as a fundamental part of Goodwill’s mission.
· Ensure that staff reflect the communities served and recognize the impact of the pandemic, the economic upheaval, and the racial reckoning on the communities Goodwill serves.
· Further Goodwill’s ability to provide care and services that respect the identities, beliefs, languages, cultures, and abilities of those served.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
The next Vice President of Mission Services will bring many of the following qualifications, professional experiences, and personal attributes:
· Passion for and commitment to Goodwill’s mission and vision and the efficacy of its Mission Services and social enterprises.
· Demonstrated success leading within a large, complex human services organization while working closely and collaboratively with other leaders.
· Expertise in workforce development, career services, or employment programs for individuals with disabilities or a related field and knowledge of trends, best practices, and funding models.
· Evidence of effective leadership within strategic planning processes and the ability to position a human services organization for success. Expertise in translating a vision and strategy into practical plans, with concrete implementation methods and measures of anticipated outcomes.
· Analytical and forecasting experience, particularly in growing and creating programmatic initiatives. Understanding of the importance of building evidence-based programs and tracking data on performance.
· Demonstrated ability to partner with an enterprising CEO, an experienced and results-oriented staff, and a committed board.
· Experience building and sustaining collaborative networks and working effectively in partnership with various groups, including community partners, business partners, government, individuals served, associations and others.
· Understanding of the business implications of plans and strategies and experience with financial oversight, including budgeting, planning, and reporting. Knowledge of grants, contracts, and other government funding requirements and mechanisms.
· Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience with advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
· A record of success as a people-centered leader and manager who recognizes and relies on staff expertise and content knowledge, believes that good ideas can come from anywhere, and leads by example.
· Confidence and a sense of humor, with a collaborative, authentic, accountable, and inspiring approach to leadership.
· Experience with CARF is a plus.
· Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred, particularly in a related clinical field.
· Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole is a plus.
