Overview

The Vice President of Actuarial Services is the top leadership position within the division reporting to President with a dotted line to the COO. This position will lead all actuarial functions for the company and will leverage actuarial expertise to shape the divisions strategy, structure, and people to achieve business objectives. This position is a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and must work collaboratively with SLT to support, implement, and optimize solutions to ensure profitable growth.  

 

Responsibilities include overseeing product pricing, valuation, capital modeling, actuarial analysis and reporting, for both direct lines of business and assumed reinsurance. Oversees the strategic and operational activities for the actuarial teams, ensuring the development and achievement of corporate property/casualty objectives, policies, and standards. A key aspect of this position is to be able to strategically build, mentor, and shape the actuarial function into a catalyst for profitable growth.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the strategic plan for the ACTUARIAL SERVICES team in alignment with the company's risk appetite. Ensuring productivity standards, quality, and strategic alignment. Accountable for analyzing the levels of reserve adequacy.

 

  • Generate options to achieve long-range goals or vision; develop decision criteria considering relevant factors (costs, benefits, buy-in, risks, the strategy's potential impact on the business); select strategic priorities with the greatest potential for positive impact.

 

  • Design and build actuarial structure to ensure total company perspective and long-term objectives are achieved.

 

  • Lead and develop the actuarial team to ensure the company has the overall actuarial talent and capabilities required. Champion development, growth, career rotations, and succession planning for the division.

 

  • Review transactions and arrangements from an actuarial perspective and partner with SLT division leaders to implement analysis.

 

  • Partner with the CFO and Controller on oversight of loss and LAE reserving analysis for financial statement purposes.

 

  • Create and develop actuarial models to enable the business.

 

  • Establishes company actuarial guidelines, develops objectives, action plans, goals, and business unit deliverables for annual business plans in support of company goals/ strategy.

 

  • Develops and oversees the annual budget for the division.

 

  • Drives innovation and transformational change through the division to gain efficiencies of operation and corporate alliances.

 

  • Facilitates and oversees the pricing of new product offerings and coverages to ensure strategic objectives are met.

 

  • Partners with Talent Development to oversee training and development programs and strategic learning objects are executed.

 

  • Serves as a leader by consistently demonstrating passion for the organization's decisions and directions; builds support for and identification with the organization's mission.

 

  • Coaches and mentor's others on actuarial body of knowledge and serves as an organizational expert.

 

  • Serves as a role model for innovation and continuous improvement.

 

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS).

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or some other analytical field from a four-year accredited college or university is required; an MBA or Master's Degree is preferred.

 

  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of leadership experience and a track record of accomplishments demonstrating skills in actuarial science and modeling is required.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to plan proactively over a multi-year period with knowledge of strategic actuarial practices.

 

  • Possesses advanced knowledge of business, industry, and market information with ability to apply knowledge to actuarial division and job responsibilities.

 

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership by serving as a role model for division employees and the company.

 

  • Experience developing and communicating corporate goals, mentoring staff to higher levels of performance and working as a team player.

 

  • Aptitude to make effective decisions and/or involve others in the decision-making process as needed to obtain information, generate alternatives, and make the best decision. Ensures buy-in and builds consensus when appropriate.  Ability to use personal judgment, experience, facts and figures to make decisions and resolve problems.

 

  • Capacity to think creatively to recommend innovative ideas and solutions to grow the business while supporting the organization's mission and goals.

 

  • Ability to encourage employees to challenge established work processes or assumptions; challenges employees to ask "why" until underlying cause is discovered; involves stake holders in continuous improvement actions and alternatives.

 

  • Ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, in various situations.

 

  • Ability to professionally present product information to a variety of groups.

 

  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service using advanced interpersonal and communication skills to resolve difficult situations or problems.

 

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects as required.

 

  • Ability to use general office equipment; knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products including MS Word and Outlook.

 

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force and to lift to 10 pounds.
  • Requires regular and predictable attendance to meet job demands.
