Position Summary:
The Veterinary Services Manager (VSM) advances Joybound's veterinary clinic and shelter medicine program by providing leadership to clinic staff to support Joybound's mission and measurable goals for spay/neuter community, outreach and customer services at Joybound's main campus and external operations. The VSM leads staff to meet or exceed objectives, ensuring humane treatment of all animals, and performs the duties of a Joybound Registered Veterinary Technician as needed.
Principle Duties:
- Lead by action and example to advance a culture of positivity, professionalism, trust, transparency, empathy, and excellence at Joybound.
- In collaboration with Clinic leadership, lead department, providing vision, direction, problem solving and oversight to all aspects and functions.
- Ensure appropriate departmental staffing. Assist with recruitment and oversees training of Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants.
- Continuously coach, evaluate, and lead work of direct and indirect reports and provide performance feedback, including disciplinary action, as needed.
- Responsible for maintaining compliance with all federal, state and local regulatory bodies governing safe work practices including the Department of Public Health, CAL-OSHA, the DEA and the Veterinary Medical Board and notify the Clinic Director when compliance related issues arise. Ensure that all safety regulations, Joybound policies and procedures governing safe work practices are followed.
- Oversee management of hospital and pharmacy inventory and supply ordering within budget. Order clinic inventory and maintain the clinic inventory system.
- Provide work direction, day-to-day support and scheduling and training of Clinic staff. Maintain the Clinic staff schedule and collaborate with other leadership in scheduling the Clinic program activities including Joybound shelter animal care, public spay/neuter services on campus and on the mobile clinic, the Community Veterinary Care program, and veterinary care provided to pets belonging to veterans.
- Assist with establishing and achieving departmental goals in alignment with strategic plan.
- In collaboration with the Director of Veterinary Services, support and evaluate clinic volunteers by making recommendations and creating enhancements and solutions to programs and attending volunteer forums to help educate and resolve problems. Analyze and expand volunteer roles within the hospital and create training programs for new roles to ensure success.
- Provide exemplary customer service in Joybound's main campus, mobile clinic, and other external settings to serve the needs of Joybound clients and patients and to meet Joybound's goals.
- Respond when needed to time sensitive off hours Clinic program and staffing questions.
- Train department staff and volunteers on proper safety protocols and procedures and alert them to hazards or potential hazards in the workplace. Ensures OSHA compliance.
- Maintain an effective and high level of communication and cooperation with all Joybound departments, staff, and volunteers, promoting inter-departmental teamwork, and a safe, productive work atmosphere.
- Maintain and report statistics, data and outcomes information consistent with strategic plan.
- As part of a team, develop and implement new or expanded programs in alignment with strategic priorities.
- Always treat people and animals with respect, contribute to effective teamwork, promote intra- and inter-departmental cooperation and foster public relations beneficial to Joybound and its programs.
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
- Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived.
- Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
- Ability to lift, move, push and pull objects and animals weighing up to 40 pounds for short distances and to humanely restrain an animal when necessary. Walk dogs weighing up to 150 pounds in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand and/or walk frequently and repetitively throughout each shift. Sit for long and short periods of time while using a computer.
- Ability to drive a large vehicle for an extended period of time.
Educational Requirements:
- Must have a current California Registered Veterinary Technician license.
- Two-year college degree with emphasis in animal science or a related field.
Experience, Abilities and Qualities Required:
- Proven organizational and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage, with a minimum of five years' experience in service delivery environment.
- Ability to give clear instructions and train staff and volunteers in an effective and respectful manner.
- Ability and initiative to work with minimal supervision and direction and receive and integrate feedback.
- Experience supervising personnel providing medical care for dogs and cats preferred.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, respectful, and tactful manner at all times.
- Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, especially larger and possibly untrained pets.
- Ability to accommodate varied work assignments and schedules.
- Must have a valid California Driver's License and may not have more than two at-fault incidents in a three-year period and no major at-fault violations in the last ten years and must be insured. Must follow safe driving practices obeying all traffic laws when operating a Joybound vehicle.

Preferred Knowledge:
- Contemporary shelter maintenance techniques and accepted sanitary practices. Preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic veterinary treatment of domestic animals.
Hours:
Exempt staff work at least 30 to 40 hours per week. Reporting times may vary according to the needs of the department. Weekend and evening work may occasionally be required.
