Job Appointment: Full-Time
Work Schedule:
Vacancy #1 - Community Gardens - Tuesday - Saturday, from 8:00am - 4:30pm;
Vacancy #2 - Parks Maintenance Swing Shift - Thursday - Monday, year-round, with shifts as early as 8:00AM-4:30PM in the fall/winter months, and as late as noon - 8:30PM in the spring/summer. The schedules may change as seasonal needs dictate.
Vacancies #3 - #8 - Parks Maintenance Day Shift - Monday - Friday, 6:30am to 3:00pm, year-round.

Position Summary:
The Utility Worker I - CL is a job type used in many City departments. Utility Workers do a variety of manual labor tasks. The type of work performed will depend on the bureau/department assigned.
Typical Duties/Examples of Work:
  • Clean restrooms, collect garbage, pressure washing, graffiti removal, snow & ice removal.
  • Use string trimmers, hedgers, backpack blowers and other power equipment and hand tools to care for turf and shrub beds.
  • Perform work zone traffic control and flagging and assist with maintenance tasks
  • Read and sends emails, record work hours, complete basic reports, and work orders
  • Drive compact and full-size pickup trucks in parks and on city streets
  • Respond to calls to work during emergencies
About the current vacancies:
Vacancy #1 - Portland Parks & Recreation, Community Gardens
This position is responsible for general garden maintenance such as trimming fence lines and weeds in vacant community garden plots, hand removing weeds and other undesired plants, spreading mulch, measuring and plotting out garden beds, and replacing missing locks. They will have frequent contact with members of the public and must be able to treat all people with dignity and respect. They perform minor maintenance and repairs of irrigation systems, small equipment including mowers, blowers, trimmers and safely operate pick-ups, smaller dump trucks, trucks with trailers, and other power equipment. The work is performed with a diverse and cohesive team as well as alone with minimal direct supervision. All members of the Community Gardens team participate in yearly anti-racism training, discussion, and related work. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

The position works Tuesday - Saturday, from 8:00am - 4:30pm.
Vacancies #2 - #8 - Portland Parks & Recreation, Park Maintenance
These positions work in Portland parks to ensure they are clean and safe for the community to enjoy. They perform basic park maintenance including picking up garbage, emptying trash cans, cleaning restrooms, removing graffiti, clearing sidewalks, and other maintenance tasks. They drive vehicles and operate small equipment such as weed eaters, backpack blowers, and pressure washers. They may work alone or as part of a crew. These positions will work in parks and around the public, so applicants should be comfortable communicating with a wide range of people.
There are currently seven (7) positions available on new teams working in parks citywide.
Vacancy #2 works the swing shift, and the schedule is Thursday - Monday, year-round, with shifts as early as 8:00AM-4:30PM in the fall/winter months, and as late as noon - 8:30PM in the spring/summer. The schedules may change as seasonal needs dictate.
Vacancies #3 - #8 - Six (6) positions work Monday - Friday, 6:30am to 3:00pm, year-round.
* Starting Wage for this position is $28.38 hourly; $30.88 hourly after 6 months of employment
