Description: The Overlake School seeks a teacher for Upper School English and Social Studies. This person should contribute enthusiastically to our school community and will work closely with grade level teams as well as with the English and Social Studies departments. A successful candidate will be comfortable fostering supportive student-teacher-family relationships and differentiating instruction for a diverse group of students.
The current English curriculum focuses on building students' critical thinking, close reading, discussion, and writing skills. Building students' understanding of their own identities as well as empathy for others is at the forefront of all activities and projects. Students will read a diverse range of voices, perspectives, and genres and hone their writing skills across various analytical and creative forms. As these are discussion-centered courses, applicants should be comfortable scaffolding and facilitating conversation in a variety of developmentally appropriate and engaging modes.
The Social Studies curriculum is grounded in four core values: historical awareness, global perspectives, civic engagement, and social justice. A successful candidate will have experience facilitating discussions about a range of historical and contemporary issues, supporting students with research and evidence-based writing, and designing courses that elevate critical thinking and citizenship.
Teaching Responsibilities and Duties: Teach four sections divided between Upper School English and Social Studies, lead an advisory (homeroom) of 8-10 students, and actively engage in the community by leading student clubs, study halls, or additional duties as needed.
