The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Part TimeProgram Assistant. Incumbent will function as Community Health worker (CHW) on a federally funded research study centered on comparing two weight loss interventions for African American adolescents and their caregivers. The Community Health worker will conduct 6-month interventions with12-19 year old adolescents and their caregivers, which will include delivering interventions in the home (or community setting) weekly with a second phone check-in once per week for the first 3 months, and weekly for the second 3 months; entering data to record intervention activities by adolescents and parents, and attend supervision sessions in Charleston; and completing research related tasks (such as data entry). Incumbent, and adolescents and their caregivers will wear a biosensor device to record heartrate and galvanic skin responses during intervention sessions. Incumbent will complete post-session research surveys. Flexibility and willingness to work a flexible schedule and work with adolescents and their parents on evenings and weekends are necessary. Position requires the use of a personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement. Position is open to applicants residing in Charleston and surrounding counties.Entity

Job Description
FLSA: Hourly
Work Schedule: M-F, 8:30AM - 5:00PM; some evenings and weekends required
Job Duties:
- 20% - CHW will provide in-home, in-office, or in-community intervention sessions. The sessions will focus on family weight loss. The sessions will also focus on barriers to weight loss.
- 20% - CHW will teach families the intervention model. The intervention model will consist of steps, healthy eating and nutrition. Intervention model may also consist of exercise
- 20% - CHW will provide families basic education in obesity. CHW will provide family education in nutrition. CHW will also make physical activity recommendations.
- 15% - CHW will teach families weight management as prescribed by primary care or specialty care physicians.
- 15% - CHW will complete research related tasks including data entry to record intervention activities.
- 10% - CHW will engage in professional development activities and ongoing training and supervision.
Preferred Training and Experience: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (or Seniors and Juniors are welcomed to apply) in Psychology, Public Health or related field. Experience may be in health education (e.g., asthma, HIV, diabetes, physical activity) or psychology (e.g. therapy groups); teaching experience may be substituted for health education in some cases. Experience working with adolescents, and parents strongly preferred. Must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills as well as comfort working with ethnic minority youth.
