Under the direction of the Teen Librarian the Tween Library Assistant is an integral part in the growth of youth in the community with a heart to serve the tween and teen population. The purpose of this role is to act as a bridge for youth who are leaving early childhood and exploring the next stage in life before entering their teen years. To accomplish the goal of having youth engaged with the library from birth through young adulthood the Tween Library Assistant would provide diverse and enriching programming, including after school passive programming and storytelling activities; perform readers advisory; and assist in outreach events when needed. They would act as an informative and trusted resource for tweens and their families in the community and are self-driven to seek out new and innovative ways to engage with these age groups. Customer service is at the heart of every position on our library team and as a customer facing position the person will need to provide premier service to all patrons, library staff, and city staff. This position does not provide supervision for other staff members.
This is a part time position, generally working 20 hours per week.
How You Add Value
- Provides premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner. Maintains the appearance of the library, answers patron's questions and assists in the location of materials and the use of the library equipment.
- Work with teen volunteers, when necessary, regarding their tween programming needs.
- Collaborate with the Teen Librarian to plan and conduct tween programs, classes, and workshops centered around education, fun, the arts, and literacy. Programming includes assisting with teen programs when needed with the Teen Librarian. Programming needs include Summer Reading and annual city events.
- Collects feedback and analyzes data to measure program success. Stays abreast of library trends and anticipates community needs for program development.
- Assists in organizing and maintaining the upkeep of the tween and teen area. Providing innovative ideas for future needs.
- Provides computer assistance with patience and care to tween and youth in the youth services area when needed.
- Assists in community outreach to schools, daycares, and Teen Summit when needed. Assists at annual City events.
- Can perform readers advisory, including digital resources, to the tween population and their families.
- Regular attendance required. Including evenings, weekends and special events.
What You Bring to the Role
- Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
- One year of customer service experience required, preferably in library environment.
- Experience with computer editing and design programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher required.
