Transportation Specialist III
Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and/or advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and oversight, and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Transportation Specialist IV:
Provides [high-level] technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and/or advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and
facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and
oversight and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to
meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Specialist III
- Evaluates and analyzes complex design issues.
- Serves as program coordinator responsible for coordination of highly advanced engineering/architectural projects from initiation to completion.
- Coordinates programs and projects to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
- Coordinates traffic studies, analyzes traffic data, determines need and prepares plan layouts for traffic projects including signs, signals, illumination devices or traffic data collection devices.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Specialist IV-In addition to the above:
- Coordinates complex traffic studies, analyzes traffic data, determines need and prepares plan layouts for traffic projects including signs, signals, illumination devices or traffic data collection devices.
- Performs complex data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
- Provides advanced technical expertise and coordination for maintenance operations including prioritizing projects, monitoring correspondence, and writing memorandums and reports.
- Assists in overseeing and/or monitoring Community Traffic Safety Programs and activities involving preparation of the District Highway Safety Plan
- Assists in prioritizing and scheduling projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Experience: 5 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Transportation Specialist III-IV
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.

- For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
