POSITION: Staff Attorney

REPORTS TO: Supervising Senior Attorney or Managing Attorney

SECTION: Training and Technical Assistance

STATUS: Full time, Exempt, Bargaining

LOCATION: Remote

SALARY RANGE: $ 80,000 - $85,000

Summary Description: The Staff Attorney has responsibility for designing and conducting trainings (both in-person and virtually), providing technical support, and writing/updating articles and other legal resource materials. The attorney in this position must analyze and apply immigration law principles to complex questions and fact scenarios. This is a temporary, 2-year, grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal.

Primary Responsibilities:

Technical Assistance and Training

  • Maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of U.S. immigration law and be informed about changes in immigration regulations and policies.
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive legal advice and mentoring to California community college student fellows on the practice of law as well as procedural and substantive immigration law matters, including but not limited to family-based immigration; naturalization; inadmissibility and deportability; asylum, Temporary Protected Status, DACA, Violence Against Women Act, U visas and other humanitarian relief; removal defense; humanitarian parole; and relief for Afghan evacuees and Ukrainian arrivals.
  • Provide Technical Assistance to CLINIC’s national network of charitable immigration legal services organizations (“CLINIC affiliates”) and partner legal services organizations.
  • Assist in preparing curriculum for and conducting in-person and virtual trainings, cohort meetings, and webinars on a range of substantive immigration law topics.
  • As assigned, write articles, and assist in updating CLINIC’s legal reference materials.
  • As assigned, accept opportunities to speak at conferences on immigration law issues.
  • Assist CLINIC’s Advocacy section on select issues including analyzing and drafting comments to proposed regulations, changes in policy guidance and revisions to immigration forms.
  • As assigned, partner with CLINIC’s Field Engagement team to:
  • Assess topics for Training and resources based on inquiries and feedback from fellows and affiliates;
  • Determine areas for continued excellent or improvement in providing Training and Technical Assistance;
  • Coordinate and collaborate on cohort sessions as appropriate.

Grant Implementation

  • May assist with administrative aspects of grant implementation such as maintaining accurate records in CLINIC’s case management system, current statistics, and data.
  • Partner with CLINIC’s Field Engagement team to develop, implement, and oversee evaluative processes to assess the quality and impact of grant-funded projects as well as to determine areas for continued excellence or improvement.
  • Provide the Director of Training and Technical Assistance with information needed for funding applications and reports, for Board of Directors and management consumption, as requested, and for budgeting purposes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Juris Doctor Degree
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the highest court in any State or the District of Columbia
  • Preference for knowledge and experience with immigration legal service providers in California
  • Three years or more of experience in immigration law
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards

  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel on occasion for trainings and conferences

Work Environment:

  • This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and repetitive lifting of significant weight.
