NATURE OF WORK
Traffic
Under supervision, the technician performs technical work in the collection of traffic data utilizing computerized electronic count equipment and/or manual traffic surveys; this data is essential for further analysis by intercity bureaus and outside agencies; this person is responsible for the proper placement of traffic counter equipment and safety in the field; work is performed under the guidance of the Traffic Technician Supervisor.
Turning Movement
Under supervision, the technician performs technical work in the collection of traffic data utilizing computerized count equipment and/or manual traffic surveys; this data is essential for further analysis by intercity bureaus and outside agencies; this person is responsible for the proper alignment of parking to capture the traffic turning movements at each assigned intersection or roadway; counter equipment and safety in the field; work is performed under the guidance of the Traffic Technician Supervisor.
Example of Work
(Illustrative Only) Assists with programming and field placement of computerized electronic traffic count controllers and pneumatic hoses to collect various types of traffic data (i.e., volume, speed, vehicle classification, gap, etc.); performs vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic counts, utilizing either computerized or manual collection equipment; assists with proper programming and field use of computerized electronic count boards used to conduct a wide variety of technical traffic surveys; organizes, cleans, stocks equipment and supplies necessary for traffic counts; performs preventive maintenance on field equipment and computerized traffic controllers, which includes testing, charging, and/or replacing batteries and replacing pneumatic hoses, as necessary; performs other related duties as necessary to accomplish YMPO goals and objectives; technicians will be required to attend Safety Meetings. Safety is an integral part of the technician; YMPO goals and objectives.
Experience and Education
High school diploma/GED, be familiar with fundamental math concepts and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to effectively perform the functions of this position; must be 18 years of age and possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license and a clean Motor Vehicle Report to be insured.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: Practices of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of roadway work; basic traffic engineering principles, data collection methods and procedures, technical computerized equipment’s, tools, and materials used in traffic data collection including basic computer competencies.
Skill in: Care and safety in the operation and care of YMPO vehicles utilized to transport personnel and equipment to various locations; effective working relationships with Traffic Count Team, Administration, and the public; following written and verbal instructions; communicating effectively verbally and in writing; maintaining confidentiality; using office processing systems and other machines, maintaining and tracking of files and reports, meeting deadlines and prioritizing work; performing and verifying mathematical computations with accuracy, preparing computerize spreadsheets if needed.
Ability to: Read and understand maps and/or sketches of traffic study plans, work orders, and vehicular volume reports; write and synthesize data; follow written and verbal instructions; effectively respond to phone calls, emails and complaints promptly, communicate effectively verbally and in writing; efficiently allocate cognitive resources to achieve thoroughness and accuracy; sit, stand, bend and lift up to 40 pounds; maintain a high standard of confidentiality; work a schedule that may include evenings and weekends; perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work Environment: The position will involve the performance of duties under adverse conditions such as inclement weather exposure to traffic, emission fumes, noise; lift traffic counter equipment; work involves periodic bending, stooping, reaching, standing and walking; hammering to install/retrieve data from traffic count equipment as part of the daily duties; Requires dexterity in operating office machines and equipment; periodic need to carry items for short distances weighing up to 40 lbs. Periodic fieldwork in varying environments. May be required to make trips off-site by motor vehicle within the YMPO service area.
