Temporary Assistant Projectionist

Position SummaryCornell Cinema is seeking a temporary, part-time cinema projectionist to support an active, semesterly screening schedule with the possibility of supplemental screenings during the summer months. Working closely under the supervision of the Head Projectionist/Technical Supervisor and reporting to the Cinema Manager, the projectionist is primarily responsible for the exhibition of motion pictures and ensuring each screening meets the high standards of presentation quality comparable with other world-class cinematheques. Duties include operating the digital cinema projectors, cinema servers, cinema sound processors, amplifiers, and PA system. With proven technical aptitude, added responsibilities can include: complex, fast-paced multi-format programs, 35mm and 16mm film projection, and event audiovisual support. Cornell Cinema presents a broad range of films each semester, including classic films, documentaries, silent and experimental works, recent Hollywood titles, and art-house fare. Offering approximately 300 screenings annually, the cinema also regularly welcomes guest speakers and visiting filmmakers, presents live music and special events, and works in conjunction with partners across the Cornell campus and in greater Ithaca community to engage and serve the widest possible audience through its programming. Cornell Cinema is a program of the Department of Performing & Media Arts within the College of Arts & Sciences at Cornell.Pay Range- $17-$20/hr.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Has at least one year of prior experience in operating 35mm projectors and/or digital cinema projectors for public screenings.
  • Fluency in using Windows and Mac computers for downloading, copying, and sharing large media files.
  • Must be able to work an untraditional schedule composed of shifts including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to quickly learn various digital and mechanical technologies.
  • Acute vision and hearing with great attention to audiovisual details.
  • An aptitude for troubleshooting technical problems and ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Enthusiasm for making moving images look and sound excellent in a cinema.
  • Good organization and communication skills and tendencies of reliability and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some background with handling archival film prints.
  • Proven ability to successfully troubleshoot issues with analog and digital media and their playback technologies.
  • Prior experience using DCP-o-matic, Adobe Premiere, command line tools, and projector control software.
