Job description

Summary/objective
The Peer Engagement Specialist- Team Lead is responsible for engaging the community and coaching peer specialists. In addition, the Team Lead will enhance services available to youth/young adults in our Intensive Services Programming through peer-to-peer connections that intentionally draw upon their lived experience to help others with similar challenges. The Peer Support Specialist will engage with youth/young adults to help them achieve individualized goals around improving physical, mental and/or emotional well-being that promote overall wellness. Peer activities include assertive engagement, modeling positive behaviors/choices, encouraging hope, upholding accountability, and advocating for equity.
Essential functions(functions and how an individual is to perform them, and the frequency with which the tasks are performed; the tasks must be part of the job function and truly necessary or required to perform the job):
  1. Develop and oversee support gatherings and groups for peer-to-Peer Engagement.
  2. Engage in community events to support and foster peer involvement.
  3. Disclose your own recovery story with the express goal of communicating hope.
  4. Model’s self-help and self-advocacy, utilizing the principles outlined by the Peer Code of Values and Competencies
  5. Accompanies and facilitates participants' engagement in community activities and resources of their choice.
  6. Build and maintain relationships with vital community partners.
  7. Support the youth/young adult in navigating life with a mental illness.
  8. Support the youth/young adult, and/or family in enlisting natural community supports in developing solutions.
  9. Deliver intensive, community-based, interactive mental health services to youth/young adults utilizing a strengths-based, skill-building philosophy.
  10. Participate in the development and maintenance of a client-centered Treatment Plan along with the family and treatment team.
  11. Support connections to community based, mutual self-help groups. Link individuals to appropriate professional resources when needed. Provide vision-driven hope and encouragement for opportunities at varying levels of involvement in community-based activities (e.g., work, school, relationships, physical activity, self-directed hobbies, etc.).
  12. Assist recovering persons to identify their personal interests, goals, strengths and weaknesses regarding recovery.

Team Lead Responsibilities
  1. Supports staff in the provision of services and models appropriate provision of care.
  2. Ensures that staff members who provide services for the program do so according to defined program goals and objectives by providing training and clinical support.
  3. Serves as a consultant internally to CMHC staff regarding Peer Services.
  4. Assists program manager in recruiting, hiring, orienting, and training new specialists.
  5. Assists program manager in conducting performance appraisals and other performance personnel functions.
  6. Engages community members and arranges/participates in community events that support peers.
  7. Provide shadowing opportunities for new staff to assist in setting boundaries and expectations with client and families, documentation, and services notes.
  8. Assists program manager with identifying and assigning referrals.
  9. Gives input regarding the development of new agency policies, as well as existing policies, to ensure a person-centered approach to providing recovery services.
  10. Provides ongoing support and coaching to all peer specialists.
Work environment (the work environment; temperature, noise level, inside or outside, or other factors that will affect the person's working conditions while performing the job):
In office, community-based settings, client home setting, and time spent within a vehicle.
Physical demands(the physical demands of the job, including bending, sitting, lifting and driving):
Must be able to sit or use a computer for periods of time, must be able to sit in a vehicle for driving for an extended period of time. Position could require bending and lifting of items into a vehicle.
Position type and expected hours of work (full time or part time, typical work hours and shifts, days of week, and whether overtime is expected):
Full-time, Monday – Friday (hours vary)
Travel(percentage of travel time expected for the position, where the travel occurs, such as locally or in specific countries or states, and whether the travel is overnight):
Travel to various offices/locations, client homes, community settings daily in the job.
Required education and experience (education and experience based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with business necessity):
  • Minimum of HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Certification as a peer support specialist/recovery coach (CHW, CRS) or similar credential preferred; ability to become certified within 120 days required.
  • Strong commitment to one’s own personal recovery and ability to use one’s experience to help others.
  • Ability to engage and establish positive rapport with a diverse group of individuals experiencing behavioral health symptoms.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with multi-disciplinary teams and staff of partner agencies and community organizations.
Preferred education and experience (preferred education and experience based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with business necessity):
  • Completion of Peer Specialist Supervisor Training
  • Great communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of human behavior, trauma response, and recovery strategies and the ability to model healthy behaviors and personal accountability.
  • Organized and able to manage your time well to meet goals.
  • Knowledge and skill in electronic communication including Microsoft Outlook and Word, electronic databases and virtual meeting platforms, or the ability to become proficient in these applications.
  • One to two years of experience providing services to clients with behavioral health symptoms.
Additional eligibility qualifications (additional requirements such as certifications, industry-specific experience and the experience working with certain equipment):
  • Research additional services/interventions to encourage community support systems.
