Job description

We are seeking a Teaching and Training Specialist in Biology who will report to the Department Chair and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs to support the educational mission of the biology department by performing and coordinating the development and administration of training programs involving graduate and undergraduate instructional support staff in undergraduate classes.


This position will oversee over 50 graduate teaching assistants and over 30 undergraduate course staff hired for biology courses each semester. Additionally, this position includes the evaluation, creation, and supervision of training for instructional staff. This position requires coordination with faculty and staff to develop the administrative tools and data systems for strategic planning that advance the Department's undergraduate experience for the students, faculty, and department. This position is grant-funded through June 30, 2028.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Training (40%)

  • Working closely with Teaching faculty, Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Undergraduate Studies, administrative staff, and chairs to coordinate and administer observation of graduate and undergraduate Teaching Assistants.
  • Prepare, analyze, and disseminate self-evaluations from Teaching Assistants and meet in small groups with instructional team members.
  • Gather and analyze data from evaluations to assess strengths and challenges and tailor individual teaching support for instructional team members.
  • Identify and evaluate specific areas in need of development in the training of instructional team members and work with teaching faculty and department chairs to establish best practices to address these needs.
  • Design and present educational modules providing recommendations and resources to departmental faculty.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and recommend changes in cooperation with evaluation experts at the CTEI.
  • Support instructors in organizing and running instructional team meetings.
  • Assist with Orientation week programming for instructional teams.

Manage Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Assistants (40%)

  • Recruit undergraduate instructional team staff by developing a pool of candidates, and soliciting input from faculty, graduate students, and staff to identify strong students interested in the position.
  • Work with the departmental instructional and administrative staff to facilitate the hiring, onboarding, and orientation of undergraduate teaching assistants and teaching staff.
  • In conjunction with faculty, develop and deliver an orientation session for teaching assistants.
  • Assign and schedule undergraduate instructional team members, coordinate absences and replacements, and approve timecards.
  • In conjunction with faculty, develop and maintain any supplemental instruction materials.


Communication and Data systems (15%)

  • Maintain the schedules and other electronic sources for undergraduate instructional team staff.
  • Liaise with partner offices (Academic Support and Office of Student Success) to ensure alignment of training, time, and expectations for tutors and supplemental instructors.
  • Liaise with key partners to maintain data systems and records of assignments, assessments, retention, and survey responses across and between courses and sections.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years of experience in training education or administrative-related setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Education, Biology, or a related field preferred.
  • Classroom Teaching and/or teaching coach experience.
