Tax Manager & Internal Auditor

The Tax Manager & Internal Auditor is under the general supervision of the Treasurer and is responsible for all aspects of trust tax reporting, Institute taxes (other than 990) and sales taxes. This position is also responsible for the internal audit and compliance functions (including managing the Finance Compliance Coordinator). This position will act as assistant to the Treasurer in some aspects of the job.

• Prepare and file trust tax returns, including forms 1041, 5227, and 1041-A. Explain and support the returns to investment administrators, trustors, and the IRS
• Prepare or assist other departments in the preparation of other tax returns and reports, including forms 1099, 1065, 1098-T, and 1042
• Prepare and file monthly, quarterly and/or annual sales tax returns
• Assure property taxes are paid for all Institute owned properties
• Coordinate the work of the tax preparers and review their work
• Research tax and accounting issues as necessary to prepare accurate returns and provide tax guidance and recommendations

• Ensure the maintenance and upkeep of all tax software systems
• Serve as backup for Cash Management function
• Prepare reconciliations for Payroll accounts
• Conduct audit interviews and reviews with all levels of staff and management for the purpose of obtaining an understanding of operations and systems

• Draft reports on audit issues and recommendations focusing on internal control structure and financial stewardship.
• Conduct annual conflict of interest assessment for management and staff
• Perform periodic audits of trusts, IRAs, pooled income funds and any other fiduciary accounts in compliance with IRS, regulation 9 and any other applicable requirements and relevant industry standards.
• Support Institute-wide Enterprise Risk Management initiatives as assigned.

• Direct the work of the Finance Compliance Coordinator assuring the Compliance Calendar is current and all assignments are clearly communicated
• Assure other assigned compliance tasks are completed

Minimum Requirements

• College degree in accounting; working knowledge of, and extensive experience in accounting; previous tax and auditing experience; strong analytical/critical thinking and interpersonal skills; strong business acumen; detail oriented; above average oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently with light supervision;
• Experienced with Microsoft Office
• Customer service oriented
• Motivated self- starter
• Able to work in the US legally without sponsorship.

Preferred Requirements

• Tax accountant, CPA, EA or CIA preferred
• ERP system experience
• Internal audit experience

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

This is a full-time position: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Some travel is expected for this position.
