Summary of Position
Under general supervision, the purpose of this job is to provide advanced technical and analytical work with responsibilities for technical consulting on various projects, including aspects of the planning, design, documentation and implementation of any component of a project which include networks, servers, database, application and package software. An employee in this position has full access to all server operating systems, networking equipment, program products, recovery operations and system utilities.

- Analyzes and recommends system software configurations for any/all existing platforms.
- Performs project coordination function for the evaluation, installation, monitoring, debugging, audit and maintenance of software on variety of hardware platforms.
- Performs operational support of servers, databases, networks and package software to include design, testing, systems administration, network administration and database administration, problem diagnosis, performance and tuning, software upgrades and business recovery.
- Plans, documents and communicates all planned operating environment changes as a result of project planning to minimize customer disruption.
- Coordinates with other administrators, analysts, operations personnel, vendors and customers.
- Confers with vendors, other City personnel and customers to determine suitability of server software products.
- Assists agency consultants in assessing the needs of the customer to determine the suitability of specific hardware and software solutions.
- Writes user documentation as appropriate.
- Assumes the role of project leader as needed.
- Installs, tests and implements hardware and software upgrades/enhancements when required.
- Prepares specifications for software and hardware systems that will adhere with the City's technical standards and be interoperable with other applications and servers.
- Responds to emergency calls relating to performance, diagnosis of problems, repairing problems or calling upon appropriate technicians.
- Diagnoses operational problems and develops effective solutions.
- Monitors data integrity and security of servers and software; monitors software products and tracks performance.
- Monitors DASD and CPU utilization for effective capacity management.
- Evaluates placement of data devices for the purpose of optimum server performance.
- Performs sizing/timing routines for system configuration.
- Performs quality reviews.
- Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
- Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
- Must report to work for duty outside normally scheduled work hours in response to natural disasters, emergencies or critical incidents as determined by City Administration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or closely related field; supplemented by four (4) years of progressive, responsible experience in information systems with work experience in server administration, database administration, network administration and desktop administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Texas Driver's License.
