POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the CNO, assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates delivery of patient care in Surgery Department. Identifies and participates in development and coordination of services. Is self-directed and self-motivated, plans and conducts work with minimal direction, and reports progress to DNS.
Acts as a surgery lead RN by assisting with or providing direct care to Perioperative patients. Is a member of the Surgery call teams. At times may be responsible for up to 25% of the Surgery Nurse call. Expectation is response within 30 minutes from time called to arrival at hospital; however, response is expected ASAP and 30 minutes is outside limit, 15 minutes or less is preferred.
MINIMUM OF QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Graduate of accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
- Licensure/ Certification/
Registration: Current RN license from the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Current BLS ACLS, NRP and PALS certifications are required. CNOR preferred.
- Experience: Three or more years of clinical nursing experience; at least two years in a Surgery Department.
- Job Knowledge: Responsible to understand and capable of implementing duties with the scope of rules and regulations of the Oregon State Board of Nursing and the Nurse Practice Act.
- Skills: Demonstrates positive leadership abilities. Able to work calmly and effectively under stressful situations. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient in Surgery Circulator Nursing skills, exceeding the standard for regular staff.
- Expected Hours of Work: Schedule may vary as needed.
- Personal Protective: Must be able and willing to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment: Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
- Travel: Travel required for this position for education and training.

- Identifies need for, and coordinates, employee orientation, in-services, and Quality Improvement programs for optimal delivery of safe patient care in peri-operative areas.
- Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
- Provides input and education for various staff and students through identification of needs, coordination, or delivery of training programs and through collaborative and/or individual efforts.
- Plans staffing/scheduling for area of responsibility.
- Acts as role model for staff demonstrating a positive attitude and work ethic.
- Participates in departmental annual practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, and evacuation procedures.
- Represents department in preparation/process development for internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
- Maintains and keeps ongoing evaluation, maintenance, and replacement schedules for equipment in department.
- Maintains working relationship with the Medical Staff and promotes care coordination of surgical patients.
- Fosters continuity of patient care and positive inter-department relationships within the Surgery and Acute patient care areas.
- Audits patient charts for accuracy in documentation.
- Administers direct nursing care to patients as needed. Able to meet all job performance criteria for Surgery RN Position Description.
- Assumes role of patient advocate respecting guidelines found in the Patient Bill of Rights.
- Effectively communicates with family and health professionals regarding care to patient.
- Fosters good public relations for nursing department and hospital.
- Collaborates with administration and support services to ensure a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
- Evaluates patient care through the quality improvement process and daily assessment/intervention/observation.
- Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs. Attends meetings, workshops and other educational opportunities as needed to enrich personal knowledge and skills, and meet hospital requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor that are consistent with surgery patient care and coordinator responsibilities.
