Supt., Fiber II

 

MISSION / SUMMARY:

The Pulp Mill Superintendent is the lead operations position within the Pulp Business unit at the Augusta Mill.  This position reports to the Fiber Sr. Manufacturing Manager and will have responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a 1,900 tpd bleached Pulp mill, including equipment, processes, and people within Pulp, Woodyard, and Caustic Plant areas.  Key process equipment includes single line long log processing and associated chip/bark management, dual lime kilns/caustic plants, ClO2 plant, 1300 tpd hardwood line with continuous digester and 3 stage bleach plant, 600 tpd softwood continuous digester with 4 stage bleach plant.  This position would also serve as a backup to the Fiber Manufacturing Manager, as needed.  

 

There are approximately 105 hourly operations personnel and 5  salaried personnel under the leadership of this position.     

 

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.

  • The Superintendent is responsible for the development and managing of the area shift supervisors and their respective crews.
  • Provide leadership in the areas of safety and environmental compliance, employee engagement, hourly and salaried team development, process productivity, efficiency and reliability
  • Exhibiting safety leadership, modeling safe behaviors, and encouraging safety engagement through Crew Led Safety Plans
  • Ensuring 100% environmental compliance with all systems
  • Ensuring 100% compliance to State, insurance, and company operating regulations
  • Department financial performance to include cost management and annual budgeting, final pulp quality, capital planning, development and maintaining of process systems
  • Supporting crew training, blended learning, and certification activities
  • Setting daily, weekly, and monthly operating priorities.
  • Monitoring process health while meeting daily, weekly and monthly operational and cost targets
  • Working with the process engineers to implement sustainable cost reduction projects
  • Working with Reliability organization and process control group to implement sustainable reliability improvement projects
  • Ensure major outage planning and execution activities are completed safety, successfully, and on budget.
  • Work systems implementation for the Fibers Department
  • Supporting daily and weekly maintenance and operations activities for the area

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 10 years Paper Mill or Pulp Mill leadership experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.

 

 EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical experience
  • 10 plus years of relevant pulp mill experience
  • Clear record of safety / environmental leadership, commitment and results
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate to groups and individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Strong commitment to reliability and to the use of continuous improvement tools/work systems to ensure sustainability of progress. 
  • Demonstrated leadership focused on accountability and results.
  • Thorough knowledge of pulp mill equipment and systems.

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is an 8+-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so. Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.  Must be willing to work weekend duty for the overall Pulp Mill area.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent, bending, stooping, squatting, as well as frequent movement throughout the facility for extended periods of time up to 8+ hours
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office, hand tools or electrical equipment
  • Employee is required to wear steel toe shoes, safety glasses and hearing protecting when in the manufacturing area.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles and times of increased heat and humidity.
  • The noise level in the immediate work environment is normally quiet, however requires exposure to a noisy manufacturing environment.
