Apply Now Job Description Town of Amherst- Recreation Department Summer Camp Director JOB SUMMARY Position performs professional and administrative work in the coordination, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the Recreation Department's "Fun in the Sun Summer Day Camp" (REC).

The position requires hands-on work and irregular hours. Position will start part-time, up to 19 hours per week and will start full-time, 37.5 hours per week, during the summer months. Monday-Friday.

Some weekend availability required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Outreach Director who provides direction and guidance, outlines departmental policies and procedures, and evaluates employee performance. Performs regular day to day duties independently and is given considerable discretion in exercising judgment, making decisions, and determining appropriate course of action.

Expected to alert the Outreach Director of serious program problems and policy issues. Work is reviewed through regular meetings, reports, conferences and public feedback. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Responsible for supervision of REC camp staff.

Trains and supervises Counselors-in-Training (CIT) program. Assigns tasks on-site and evaluates completed work for effectiveness and uniformity of established procedures and policies. MAJOR DUTIES Coordinate indoor and outdoor areas and facilities for successful program implementation and effective maintenance procedures.

Maintain camp office space and care for REC camp supplies and equipment. Assist with recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating REC camp staff and CITs. Manage staff time entry.

Assist with implementation and development of comprehensive staff training program for these staff members. Administer discipline for campers, communicating with Outreach Director and families when necessary. Develop and administer evaluation systems for determining program quality and customer satisfaction.

Coordinate scheduled visits and visitors, including guest speakers and performers. Monitor transitions on campus (between activities, to presentations, to lunch) and off campus (trips to War Memorial Pool) Communicate regularly with families and community on scheduled events, upcoming opportunities, necessary adjustments, and general performance feedback. Respond to public inquiries about recreation programs and collaborate with other established groups to meet programming and community needs.

Assist with marketing and public relations efforts in collaboration with Outreach Director and the Recreation Department. Works to promote department programming where appropriate. Manage camp check-in and pickup times daily.

Manage Extended Day staff and activities. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS At least two years of college experience.

Major in Education, Childhood Development, Psychology/Social Work or other developmental disciplines with focus on elementary aged children. Strong personal experience in interactive extracurricular activities (arts, sports, clubs) preferred. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and strong leadership abilities.

Considerable knowledge of child development and management. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to plan and supervise work of staff and volunteers.

Basic computer skills or willingness to learn also required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must pass the (CORI) history/juvenile record history as well as a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The employee is regularly required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision requirement includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly required to spend time in office settings, with time spent on the phone/at a computer.
