Job description

Young Mariner Program Director (Summer Camp)

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Classification:

March through May: 5-10 hours per week.

June through August: 32-40 hours subject on candidate’s ability to lead the full scope of the program.

Salary: $50 per hour

Description:

The Young Mariner Program is the Cape Cod Maritime Museum’s summer, on water, educational program. This program is the keystone component of the museum’s Young Mariner Project. This program’s goal is to expose Cape children to all aspects of maritime culture by spending time on the water focusing on marine biology, navigation, maritime history, sailing, seamanship, and naval architecture. To do this, we integrate the museum’s exhibits, our Dyer 29 research vessel, ADVENTURE, our historic catboat SARAH, and the “classroom” of Nantucket Sound to provide a fun, high content experience.

The Program Director will have day to day responsibility for running the Program, including budget oversight, daily execution, safety of camp, and quality of product delivered. In a Program Director, the museum is looking for an individual who will bring a unique combination of experience and expertise to the museum’s senior leadership team:

1. Deep knowledge and experience on and around boats and the water such that they can be responsible for the absolute safety of our program.

2. Experience with children such that they can effectively act as lead educator, bringing our curriculum to the children in the program.

3. Administrative and institutional experience such that they can assist us in further developing the component parts of the Young Mariner Project as part of the museum’s leadership team.

4. A sincere interest in being on the water with children on a daily basis.

While this position is a summer position, an additional consideration is to find an individual that appreciates our vision of combining maritime exhibits and experiences and may be interested in assisting with shoulder season programming.

Licensing and educational requirements

  • USCG “six pack’ license (required)
  • Experience as a Camp Counselor or Director (required)
  • CPR Certification (required)
  • First Aid Certification (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred)

Young Mariner Program 2024 Scope

This summer’s Young Mariner Program components to be executed by the Program Director are:

1. Young Mariner 1: This program runs from Monday to Thursday and consists of morning and afternoon groups of six middle school children. Each child attends the program for four days, during which time our curriculum is focused on four different areas of concentration: marine biology, navigation, and seamanship, sailing and marine physics/boatbuilding. Each session starts inside the museum and then transitions to either ADVENTURE or SARAH, depending upon the day’s focus. This will be the fourth year of this program.

2. Young Mariner 2: Our goal for this program is to be a more advanced version of Young Mariner 1 for slightly older children. This summer we want to test this program by holding a series of 3-4 Friday/Saturday “bootcamps” focusing on marine bio and navigation/seamanship.

3. Sailing Bevin’s Skiffs: If possible, we also want to experiment with introducing sailing to children in our sailing Bevin’s skiffs. These boats are built at the museum by children and our long-term goal is to incorporate this activity into our program. We will have completed four boats during the 2023/2024 winter and see the summer of 2024 as an opportunity to design a way to do this.

4. On Fridays, when there is no Young Mariner 1 or 2 activity, the Program Director will bring ADVENTURE to various locations around Lewis Bay/Nantucket Sound to promote the program. While much of the curriculum has been developed over the program’s previous three years, we will expect to work with the successful candidate to help us complete the 2024 curriculum and bring their own background and expertise to its evolution.

Associated Program Staffing: The Program Director will have support staff including an onboard “mate/assistant” as well as access to other part time museum staff as required.
