Position: McDaniel College First Year Experience (FYE) Peer Mentor

Scope: Peer mentors represent and model all the positive qualities of a McDaniel student. Peer mentors will provide academic, personal, and social support for first-year students making the transition to the McDaniel College community. Additionally, Peer Mentors will assist the FYE team with various first-year activities, including Student Success workshops and freshmen highlight events.
Basic Responsibilities:
Peer mentors drive the First-Year Experience for new students by fostering an inclusive environment that helps new students develop strong identities as McDaniel community members.
Peer mentor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Attend, and successfully complete, spring semester training.
- Check email throughout the summer and provide timely responses, if necessary.
- Connect with incoming mentees via email prior to orientation.
- Attend August training.
- Participate in August Orientation (for all events you are assigned and/or are relevant to your mentees).
- Develop a clear plan for in-class and out-of-class mentee-focused expectations with FYS instructor.
- Attend all in-person and/or synchronous class sessions.
- Help monitor attendance of FY students each week of the First Look series. Engage with any student responses and help facilitate meaningful conversation related to topics prevalent in various First Look sessions.
- Encourage all, and attend at least two a week, of the freshmen highlight events with mentees during the fall semester.
- Support Student Success Workshops, as needed.
- Meet with the Associate Director of the First-Year Experience and Transition Programs in the fall and/or as requested.
- Assist the FYE team with the evaluation efforts of the FYE.

- February/March 2024 - December 2024
- This timeline begins with spring training, continues through August training and orientation, and progresses through the entire fall semester.
- Hours scheduled at the discretion of the supervisor

- Peer Mentors are evaluated on a continuing basis at the discretion of the supervisor
Requirements:
Qualifications & Expectations
- Must have successfully completed at least 1 semester at McDaniel by the start of spring training.
- Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have a clean disciplinary record at McDaniel College (i.e., not on disciplinary probation as of the start of employment).
- Involved in the campus community and proud McDaniel student who demonstrates a high level of professionalism.
- Reliable, responsible, and detail-oriented.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and modeling inclusive behavior and promoting a culture of belonging.
- Participate in a required interview process.
- Participate in the required training sessions (in-person and online). The first training is expected to take place in March. Students will also move onto campus early for training ahead of New Student Orientation in August.
