Job Description


Shift Schedule: Per Diem; Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 4:30PM, as needed.

General Summary

Under direct supervision of the on-site physician, assists in the delivery of patient care. Performs delegated medical tasks and may perform clerical duties.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.
  • Follows established guidelines to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam. Prepares patient for examination by physician.
  • Performs routine office testing, including but not limited to; urinalysis, vision testing, hearing screening, pulmonary function testing, temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
  • Assists physician with procedures and minor surgical procedures.
  • Obtains necessary blood and urine specimens under direct supervision of physician.
  • Administers and documents injections and other medications given under direct supervision of physician.
  • Assists physician with clarification of patient instruction such as, diagnostic test preparation, and medication administration.
  • Exhibits compassion and empathy for all patients and families at all times.
  • Sterilizes all reusable instruments and equipment as needed.
  • Maintains necessary supplies in clinical area.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient populations(s) served. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent. Concurrent enrollment in an accredited Medical Assistant program with permission of instructor or department chair.
  • Demonstrated skill in venipuncture.
  • Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to interact with personnel of all levels within the organization and work within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Interpersonal skills, customer orientation and an outgoing and pleasant demeanor.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated competence with patient or customer information systems.
  • Highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels hospital staff, patients, visitors, and levels of staff.

Working Conditions

  • Weekend, shift work, on-call, holiday and overtime may be required.
  • Usual office conditions involving a high-volume of public contact.

Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Implements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
