Qualifications for Employment
Education (Minimum Requirements):
Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field with counseling coursework.
Employment Experience Preferred:
Licensed NYS Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Social Worker (LMSW or LCSW) preferred. Minimum of one year of working experience in education and program support, Student Development, counseling, outreach services in a college setting with diverse and non-traditional populations preferred.
Pertinent Other: Must be interested in and committed to working as part of a team to support Student Development. Excellent customer service working with diverse communities using patience and active listening. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to share complex information with a diverse population.
Nature and Scope of Duties
The Student Development Specialist reports to the Dean of Student Development/Director of the Center for Careers and Transfer and/or their designee and performs the following duties within the Student Development Unit:
1. Provides individual and group psychological/personal counseling and maintains appropriate documentation. (Student Development Specialist –Licensed)
2. Develops and facilitates student educational and support groups, as needed, to efficiently and effectively address common Student Development concerns. (Student Development Specialist – Licensed)
3. Provides support to students in crisis to deescalate and develop a plan moving forward.
4. Assists with the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of theory-based and evidence informed best practices and programming to foster Student Development, with a focus on mental health intervention/prevention, persistence, retention, and achievement of desired outcomes.
5. Supports students in developing academic, personal and career success plans focused on meeting the demands of their coursework and personal responsibilities to facilitate reaching personal, education and career goal attainment.
6. Assists in developing and delivering trainings for faculty and staff on matters related to multiple aspects of student wellness and development.
7. Provides informational presentations to students and prospective students about Student Development offices and support offerings.
8. Collaborates and partners with interdisciplinary campus groups to develop comprehensive Student Development intervention, outreach ad programming.
9. Assists with the development and implementation of a campaign promoting positive mental health, wellness and development.
10. Communicates with outside social service agencies in preparation for referrals, and makes referrals where appropriate.
11. Works with Dean of Student Development to assess and address needs of Student Development offices in regard to staffing, outreach and programming.
12. Provides data and reports based on student support and outreach efforts as requested.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
This is a full-time 37.5-hour work week position that will require occasional evening and/or weekend work with a salary range of $47,500.00 unlicensed or $53,560 for licensed.
