Description
The Office of Water Programs on the campus of Sacramento State is seeking to hire one detail-oriented Student Assistant to work with technical and production editors in producing training manuals (similar to textbooks) and related instructional materials for drinking water and wastewater utility operators. You will gain skills in proofreading and copy editing non-fiction manuscripts and other deliverables for publication in print and digital formats. You will learn about the educational publishing sector as well as the important role drinking water and wastewater treatment plays in protecting the environment and public health.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
UEI does not allow employees to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one college or center per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI position for a different UEI posting should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (i.e., degree, license, or official transcript), DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position, you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.
Prerequisites
Must be a Sac State student enrolled in at least six-semester units (undergrad) or four-semester units (graduate) students.
Majors/Fields of Study
Communication Studies, Education, English, History, Humanities, Journalism, Liberal Arts, or another academic discipline that requires extensive research.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule to be determined by supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring & summer).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Dependable, punctual, and responsible in work attendance. Able to work consistent schedule on a weekly basis.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member who can, with guidance, prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Available to work a minimum of 3 hours per day, 3-5 days per week (Monday-Friday) --AND--available to work a minimum of 12 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • Ability to work in an organized manner and to deliver quality work with minimal errors.
  • Excellent command of English language, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally by email and phone to obtain information from internal and external resources.
  • Proven ability to gather and communicate detailed information accurately, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience with internet-based search methods and tools.
  • Skilled in use of standard office computer applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook in the Microsoft Office suite, and use of internet search browsers such as Mozilla and Google Chrome.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Writing, editing, or publishing interest or experience.
  • Interest in print or online content development and publishing processes.
  • Experience with developing educational training materials.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct internet-based and other types of research, such as fact checking, to support the revision of training materials.
  • Verify that content has been transferred or inserted correctly into final documents, digital materials, or other work products by comparing deliverables to source material.
  • With increasing proficiency, review documents or other work products for correct grammar, spelling, and style.
  • Identify and contact third-party resources as part of the process for obtaining permission to use copyrighted materials, including text, photos, and diagrams.
  • Review digital instructional materials (online courses) or other deliverables to verify that functionality, navigation, and other elements are presented as intended.
  • Assist production editor with maintenance of Publications archive.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Publications Manager or designee.

Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment.
