The Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal) is seeking to hire a talented, highly motivated student to assist with data management, analysis, and visualization using various business intelligence tools. This position will help FI$Cal better serve the people of California by unlocking key insights in our data and sharing it internally, with state departments, and with the public.
The Student Assistant will also work within FI$Cal’s Government Affairs Office, Data Analytics Section and report to the Staff Services Manager I. The Student Assistant will be working with a variety of teams and staff at FI$Cal, including the Information Technology Division and the Business Operations and Solutions Division, among others.
Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
UEI does not allow employees to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one college or center per pay period. Must is a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring, and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring & summer).
M inimum Qualifications

- Ability to work well with others, including high-level executives, other state departments, staff, and peers; a team player.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Able to facilitate small to medium size meetings.
- Thorough understanding and use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong data management and analysis skills, especially with Power Business Intelligence (BI), R, Python, Structured Query Language (SQL), Excel, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience creating data visualizations using Power BI, R, Python, Tableau, Excel, D3, or other tools.
- Experience conducting statistical analyses in R or Python.
- Experience conducting survey research.
- Familiarity with government and accounting is a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Writing and proof-reading.
- Cataloguing and describing FISCal’s various data sources.
- Performing and supporting descriptive and exploratory data analysis, visualizing data using business intelligence tools (such as Power BI and R Programming).
- Working with internal and external stakeholders to support the development of California’s financial transparency portals.
- Supporting extract, transform, and loading tasks; data cleaning and organizing.
- Performing user research, proposing uses for FI$Cal’s data, designing solutions to user problems.
- Administrative and logistical support tasks such as email management, event coordination, meeting scribe, etc.
- Meeting facilitation. Support managers and staff on various tasks including developing documentation, training, and business support activities.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a hybrid environment.
*Students will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
