The Student Assistant reporting location is at 928 Pacific Blvd., Oceano, CA 93445.
This position will work under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist). The Student Assistant works under close supervision and in a learning capacity on the shorebird management program. Duties may include conducting monitoring for two federally listed bird species (threatened snowy plover and the endangered least tern) including monitoring adults, nests, chicks and broods. General duties also include fence, sign, and nest enclosure installation and maintenance; collecting scientific field notes; data entry, and technical report writing; and working with the public as a State Park representative and with an interdisciplinary team. Weekend, holiday, early morning (before dawn), and evening shifts will be required and must be willing to adjust workdays as needed.
Applicants should have the following qualities: Be flexible, open minded, and able to reason logically; be able to take direction and establish and maintain effective working relationships; work well with the public as a State Park representative; be able to work under adverse conditions such as in heavy wind and moving sand; be willing to do routine work in order to learn; and have the ability to draw sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
Applicants must have a clean Class C Driver license and willingness to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle. An interest in biological and environmental issues is preferred.
