The Structural BIM Operator is responsible for using BIM software and technology to create, maintain, and coordinate 3D models and data related to the structural aspects of design projects. They work closely with engineers and other project team members to ensure accurate representation and efficient management of structural information throughout a project's lifecycle. Under the guidance of a project manager, the BIM Operator will engage in all aspects of modeling and drawing production for a variety of structures from the initial stages of design planning to construction administration.
- BIM Model Creation: Develop 3D BIM models of structural components, including beams, columns, foundations, walls, and other elements using Revit. This includes manipulating and perhaps creating Revit families for projects.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with structural engineers, and other project team members to integrate structural design elements into the overall building model.
- Clash Detection: Use BIM software to perform clash detection, identifying and resolving conflicts or interference between structural elements and other building systems (e.g., mechanical, electrical, plumbing).
- Detailing and Documentation: Create detailed drawings, plans, sections, and schedules from the BIM model for construction documentation and coordination purposes.
- Quantity Takeoff: Generate accurate quantity takeoffs from the BIM model to assist with cost estimation and procurement of materials.
- Revision Control: Maintain and update BIM models as design changes occur during the project, ensuring all stakeholders have access to the latest information.
- Compliance and Standards: Ensure that the BIM models and documentation adhere to industry standards, building codes, project-specific requirements, and company standards.
- Training and Support: Provide guidance and training to other team members, including engineers and drafters, on BIM software and best practices.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct quality checks on BIM models and documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, BIM 360 and Bluebeam
- Familiarity with industry standards and best practices related to BIM implementation (e.g., ISO 19650, AIA BIM protocols).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
- Knowledge of structural engineering principles and terminology is a plus.
Education, certification, and experience:
- Associate degree in engineering design technology or similar degree.
- Minimum 5 years of experience.
Work Environment:
Structural BIM Operators primarily work in office settings, utilizing BIM software and collaborating with project teams.. They may occasionally visit construction sites to better understand project requirements or resolve issues related to the BIM model.
Career Advancement:
Experienced Structural BIM Operators may advance to roles like BIM Coordinator, BIM Manager, or even move into project management positions. Ongoing training and certification in BIM software and processes can enhance career prospects in this field.
