About the position:
This position will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing of a specialized roll to roll pilot machine. The roll-to-roll machine, not commercially available, performs a unique and specialized process. This position will manage the roll to roll equipment in its entire product development lifecycle - from research and development, design, manufacture, installation, qualification and final commissioning. As part of an innovative research team, this engineer will be the link between the lab research to scale-up pilot run.
Responsibilities:

  • Design and modify Roll to Roll (R2R) equipment
  • Collaborate with external vendors and equipment manufacturers to design innovative Roll to Roll equipment
  • Define equipment scope, requirements, specifications, FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), SAT (Site Acceptance Test), and contract terms
  • Develop and strictly adhere to scheduled delivery timelines for external vendors
  • Travel to external vendor locations to oversee the execution of equipment designs
  • Utilize various CAD software tools, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD, for precision in equipment design
  • Develop and document equipment PM and calibration processes
  • Work with Electrical Engineers and Control Engineers to integrate stand-alone components into a Roll to Roll production line
  • Design prototypes and fixtures with fast turnaround
  • Collaborate closely with R&D scientists, engineers, and the process team to implement scale up designs based on existing pilot prototypes
  • Travel to E Ink sites for the installation and troubleshooting of the R2R production line
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies as necessary to ensure the design of operational equipment meets high safety standards

Qualifications:
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or an additional 5 years of relevant experience is required
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial equipment design
  • Extensive experience in designing Roll to Roll equipment
  • Proficiency in working with high voltage equipment, particularly similar to Corona or Atmospheric Plasma roll to roll devices of production scale
  • Expertise in designing annealing equipment for roll to roll processes
  • Demonstrate ability to provide quick turnaround of prototype fixtures
  • Proficient in various CAD related software, such as Solid Works and AutoCad
  • Proven track record in scaling process equipment from initial R&D sketches to production drawings
  • Successful experience in collaborating with control and electrical engineers to integrate their input into mechanical designs
  • Previous successful delivery of production Roll to Roll equipment (e.g., AMAT or Faustel) is a critical skill for this position
  • Capability to work effectively in diverse teams, considering factors such as professional backgrounds, experience levels, and other relevant aspects
  • Knowledge of thermal design for Roll to Roll ovens
  • Experience in designing vacuum holders
  • Strong team interaction skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills

Benefits:
The anticipated annual base salary range for this position is $130,000-$180,000 for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
