Job Description:

Education:

• Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
• Membership in good standing in at least one state bar

Work Experiences:

• At least 5 years of experience in commercial and general litigation with a law firm or in-house legal department required
• Experience with a retail company at least $1 billion in revenue in a corporate environment preferred
• Prior managerial experience preferred

Skills:

• Ability to provide sound and practical legal advice with proven success in balancing legal risk with business objectives
• Analytical with strong problem-solving abilities and creative resolution skills
• Ability to take manage a high volume of matters at any given time, work well under pressure, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments, and effectively manage deadlines
• Ability to analyze complex matters and propose creative and practical solutions, even in ambiguous situations
• Capable of interacting with, and establishing the respect and confidence of, senior business leaders
• Self-starter with the ability to work well independently, as well as effectively contribute to a team environment
• Strong supervisory, coaching, and training skills
• Strong strategic planning skills
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Ability to influence and provide timely, effective legal and business advice and support at all organizational levels
• Ability to remain organized, pay attention to detail
• Professionalism, judgment, personal integrity, and confidentiality

Responsibilities:

• Manage all aspects of litigation facing the enterprise, including construction defect, intellectual property, personal injury, environmental, land use, and contract (business) disputes
• Responsible for handling and managing disputes and litigating cases as counsel-of-record and by partnering with outside counsel on litigation matters
• Analyze claims and formulate litigation strategy
• Conduct fact investigations and legal research
• Oversee internal investigations across a range of legal and compliance matters
• Represent the company in negotiations, hearings, mediations, and other forums
• Partner with business clients to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully and maintain the highest level of confidentiality
• Responsible for the management, coaching and development of paralegal team members
• Develop strong partnership with leadership, including senior management from other corporate departments, distribution centers, stores and their vendors
• Hire and manage outside Legal Counsel
• Operate within constraints of the financial budget for assigned practice area(s) and assist with annual budget submissions
• Develop a thorough understanding of Academy policies, procedures, and safety rules, and develop standardized processes and procedures for the organization in identified practice area(s)
• Responsibilities may change; Team Members may be required to perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements & Attendance:

• Regular attendance in office required
• Some travel may be required
• Acceptable level of hearing and vision to perform job duties
• Adhere to company work hours, policies, procedures and rules governing professional staff behavior
