JOB SUMMARY
The Industrial Hygienist is an integral part of the Safety, Health, and Environmental team at each site. This is a hands-on individual support position that directly interfaces with all levels of employees to conduct industrial hygiene monitoring, ergonomic assessments, PPE evaluations, and incident investigations. They are expected to act as a agent of the company and lead the company’s IH efforts at several levels of the organization. Works under only general direction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the site industrial hygiene monitoring program and ensure it is compliant with regulatory requirements.
- Perform assessments of new processes and products and provide input on potential control measures, including the selection of appropriate PPE and engineering controls.
- Perform industrial hygiene monitoring of various chemicals and processes and provide management with recommendations to reduce/eliminate employee exposures. Communicate industrial hygiene monitoring results to employees and provide mentoring on the meaning of the results as needed.
- Develop and maintain adherence to the annual site industrial monitoring plan, maintaining an accurate record of results.
- Comprehend and train personnel on exposure banding and control technologies for potent compound manufacturing and handling.
- Perform surrogate testing as needed for new equipment and products to develop equipment capabilities handling chemicals with low exposure limits.
- Develop safety data sheets and safety data summaries for new products and chemicals.
- Assist site HAZMAT team, as needed, for odor response and spill mitigation by working with the Incident Commander and providing monitoring, PPE selection, and general chemical guidance as requested.
- Assist in conducting incident investigations, developing and manage preventative / corrective actions of accidents, incidents and near misses.
- Conduct work area and work practice safety audits, as required.
- Assist in developing and conducting safety meetings and employee training programs.
- Maintain safety-related record keeping consistent with OSHA requirements.
- Act as an agent of the company when interacting with regulatory and third-party officials, promote development of the safety culture, and assist with achieving with company goals.
- Participate in hazard reviews and ensure compliance with program elements and documentation for adequacy and completeness.
- Perform office ergonomic consults and provide recommendations for improvement as requested.
- Develop written reports for the above activities and track recommendations to completion.
- Additional areas of focus include safe manufacturing operations, chemical handling and storage, equipment isolation (lockout/tagout, line breaking), fire prevention (including hot work), confined spaces, industrial ventilation, material handling, IPP implementation, and emergency response.
- Assist site Medical, as needed to support the Respiratory Protection Program.
- Participates in production support including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Typically requires 5-8 years of related experience and a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- BS degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or related science or engineering related discipline.
- 5-8 years of directly related experience in a manufacturing / production environment.

- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills needed to participate in cross departmental groups.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be capable of creating and communicating safety information to diverse audiences.
- Can handle all levels of communication including speaking with large audiences.
- Act as an agent of the company when interacting with regulatory and third-party officials representing the Company with appropriate care and diligence.
- This is a "boots on the ground" position.
- Proficiency using Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint.
CERTIFICATIONS and LICENSES
- CIH certification or currently pursuing certification required.
