Summary:

Provides overall direction and planning for all vineyard management companies for Rombauer vineyards and growers. Including farm plans, spray and pest management programs, vineyard capital improvements and development and viticultural direction to ensure grape quality standards. Works directly with winemaking team to assess and drive grape quality for each product. Works as the liaison between the grower and winemaking team. Providing direction for growers across all vineyard practices to ensure grape quality standards. Also sourcing additional and new vineyards under direction of the senior director of winemaking. This pivotal role links the vineyard to the bottle, providing the grape quality to ensure wine standards and consistency are meet. 

What You Will Do:

  • Directs the development, management, and maintenance of vineyard plantings and field experiments in viticulture.
  • Directs plant propagation, vine training and trellising, and treatment application.
  • Applies cultural manipulations include pruning, irrigation, and crop load management.
  • Maintains and implements appropriate experimental protocols and field plot designs.
  • Coordinates treatment applications and vine manipulations with vineyard managers and other personnel.
  • Participates in data collection and basic statistical analyses.
  • Participates in the maintenance of viticulture laboratory facility at the including equipment and supply inventory.
  • Negotiates all short and long term contracts in assigned area with minimal guidance from leadership;
  • Travels to grower sites to inspect vineyards, identify improvement opportunities and advise growers on growing practices and changes necessary to mitigate risk.
  • Initiates, implements, and manages short and long term projects. Actively participates/leads cross functional teams in order to achieve company goals. Assigns and guides Intern project.
  • Develops an extensive network of market intelligence sources and provides feedback to management to develop pricing and sourcing strategies and decisions. 
  • Possesses strong understanding of competitive crops and ag economics in their region or territory.
  • Actively participates and makes recommendations in the development of pricing strategy.
  • Develops or approves recommendations to change policies and procedures; ensures timely and accurate implementation.
  • Supports the establishing and of controlling budgets; develops and maintains operating budget and capital spending plan.
  • Represents the company in various public and community events.
  • Oversees the performance of contracted growers and monitors their application of procedure, works with growers to meet quality objectives and resolve issues.
  • Hires, trains, and manages seasonal staff members, including Interns, Vit Techs and sugar samplers.
  • Continuously improves and develops new skills; stays current with the latest literature and takes initiative to apply ideas that potentially could contribute to improved viticulture processes.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Plant Science, Viticulture, Land Resource Management, Forestry Resource Management, Ag Business, Enology, Winemaking, or Business Administration plus 4 years agriculture, ranch/vineyard management, viticulture or winemaking experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR High School diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 8 years of agriculture, ranch/vineyard management or winemaking experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver's license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver's license or appropriate state driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Required to drive to various ranch locations as part of job functions.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include color vision.
  • Required to lift and move product and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Required to work long hours during peak season.
  • Required to travel to company offices, sites, and/or meeting locations for onboarding, training, meetings, and events for development, department needs, and business delivery up to 5% of the time, with or without reasonable accommodation. This may be in addition to travel requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.
  • Required to be 18 years or older. This may be in addition to other age requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

Compensation:

  • Hiring Salary Range Posted: $102,600 - $154,000 / year
  • Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
