Description
The Specialty Program Instructor/Coach is responsible for implementing and leading Specialty Program activities and coaching Special Olympics sports in a recreational setting while working with special populations. The Specialty Program Instructor/Coach is under the direction and supervision of the Special Recreation Manager. This is a year-round part-time position. Duties include conducting a variety of group activities for assigned Specialty Programs and being directly responsible for the safety and welfare of the participants. Primary emphasis should be on fun and individual growth through well-rounded and diversified recreational opportunities, all within the guidelines of Belvidere Park District's goals and philosophy.
The Specialty Program Instructor/Coach will be on-site during program hours and responsible for working during the day, evening, or weekends, depending on program needs. Shifts will vary and Instructors/Coaches may be asked to stay later than the scheduled shift, if necessary. Schedules will include up to a maximum of 18 hours per week, but weekly hours are not guaranteed. This position is not to exceed 936 hours during a calendar year.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older.
- High School Diploma.
- Experience in working with special populations, program planning & implementation, coaching/sports knowledge, and behavioral management preferred, but not required.
- The ability to communicate effectively with special populations, parents/guardians, supervisors, co-workers, and other community contacts.
- Portray a positive influence in working with participants, parents/guardians, and the public.
- Dependability, promptness, and punctuality.
- Flexibility and enthusiasm with a genuine interest in working with people who have disabilities.
- Ability to attend all staff training, orientations, and meetings.
- Medic First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (or the equivalent) is required within 30 days of hire date. If you are not already certified, a class will be offered at no cost.
- Handle with Care training is required. A class will be provided at no cost.
- Valid Driver's License and the ability to drive park district vehicles and transport participants (if 21 years of age or older).
