The Office of Lab Animal Resources (OLAR) in the Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Special Project Coordinator.
About the Opportunity
As a Special Project Coordinator, you will work under the direction of the Operations Manager of the Office of Lab Animal Resources (OLAR) and coordinate equipment maintenance checks in OLAR vivaria (HSC, RNI, LSB, FARF), work on Special Projects, assist with safety oversight, and assist with transportation between facilities. The Special Project Coordinator will be responsible for preventative maintenance and trouble-shooting equipment malfunctions in OLAR facilities under the guidance of the facility and infrastructure manager.

What you'll do:
Equipment Maintenance/Husbandry Duties:
  • Coordinate and/or perform equipment maintenance, certifications, and repairs in OLAR facilities.
  • Responsible for scheduling and servicing veterinary equipment and maintaining husbandry equipment.
  • Responsible for weekly servicing of RO water, water softener, and TAF water systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining any auxiliary equipment used to support vivarium operations.
  • Assist and perform Special Projects within the vivarium as assigned by operations manager.
  • Work with the OLAR Management to coordinate and schedule maintenance workers in OLAR facilities.
  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate room entry order is adhered to for all maintenance workers and outside vendors servicing equipment.
  • Communicate with research staff and consider researcher needs to schedule repairs to avoid disruption.
  • Responsible for maintaining up to date logbooks for maintenance on all OLAR veterinary and husbandry equipment (including cage wash records).
  • Assist operations manager with IT support for facility.

Animal Husbandry Duties:
  • Disassemble rodent caging and separate equipment.
  • Dump soiled cages in cage wash area and run soiled cages through rack and tunnel washer.
  • Operate cage washers for sanitizing and sterilizing rodent cages.
  • Prepare routine daily maintenance on cage washers as described in SOP's and as directed by supervisors.
  • Reassemble rodent cages, auxiliary equipment, other cages and equipment.
  • Prepare cages for room setups and cage changes.
  • Provide cage setups and general support to the "Core Facilities" within the perimeter of the vivarium.
  • Remove trash daily, provide general custodial duties for work area and support areas.

Animal Care Duties:
  • Observe animals in assigned animal rooms and report any abnormalities to the supervisor or veterinary staff.
  • Provide food and water to animals and cage changes as described in the SOP's and daily work schedule.
  • Set up for newly arrived animals and put newly arrived animals in cages as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Provide topical and other basic clinical treatments as prescribed by veterinary staff.
  • Document all procedures performed in animal rooms including room logs, temperature/relative humidity and monthly room duties as described in logbook.
  • Report to supervisors any abnormalities with equipment in animal rooms or abnormalities that require immediate attention.

Transportation Duties:
  • Assist husbandry staff and management with movement of items between buildings on campus. This includes transportation of animals between facilities.

Safety Duties:
  • Oversee and review safety issues within OLAR facilities and report deficiencies to the facility husbandry management.
  • Work with OLAR Husbandry Manager(s) to ensure that OLAR facilities comply and free of physical defects for IACUC and outside agency inspections.
  • Responsible for maintaining and keeping record for all OLAR vehicles.
  • Responsible for oversight and documentation of safety checks in OLAR facilities (eye wash, vermin/pest control, showers, defibrillators, first aid kits, fire extinguishers).

Cleaning and Building Upkeep:
  • Assist husbandry staff with cleaning hallways, procedure rooms, animal rooms, restocking shelves, and maintaining supplies.
  • Assist staff in cage wash if needed.
  • Responsible for assisting with receiving and stocking husbandry equipment and supplies.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma and vocational training of up to 18 months beyond high school within the maintenance field or equivalent. Broad knowledge of various building trades is necessary.
  • A minimum of two (2) years working in research animal vivariums and/or certified ALAT through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or equivalent vocational experience.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, and set priorities, as instructed by supervisors. Be able to meet quota standards and workload after 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to understand basic program of animal care.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, to fulfill the mission of the department.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to drive standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Knowledge of building trades methods and practices.
  • Ability to stoop, bends, crawls and climbs heights over 10 feet.
  • Ability to work around moving equipment.
  • Ability to read, follow and interpret safety rules and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards.

  • Valid US driver's license.
  • Medical Monitoring -- This position may or may not require Medical Monitoring, including periodic health monitoring and/or training.
