THE OPPORTUNITY
Join Scholastic's technology team as a Software Engineering Intern, helping to build the next generation of Scholastic software and systems that reach teachers, students, and parents across the world. Scholastic is seeking candidates to develop, deliver, and manage the lifecycle of new and existing software applications. This candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of closely aligned business units to manage the full software development life cycle.
Scholastic Technology Services (STS) is dedicated to driving technology-related business results for our external and internal business partners, broken down into technology engineering, internal systems and operations, online and digital content, portfolio management, and analytics/information marketing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Building, testing and deploying enhancements to existing software and infrastructure
  • Participate in code reviews, testing and debugging to ensure the quality and reliability of software deliverables
  • Working closely with domain teams on a variety of new and existing projects
  • Participating actively in the Agile development process as part of a dynamic project team
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in Software Engineering to support continuous improvement and innovation.

Preferred (but not required) Skills and Knowledge
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases like Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB etc.
  • Knowledge of event driven (EDA) and pub/sub architectures with messaging systems such as Apache Kafka.
  • Knowledge of container technologies and platforms such as Docker and EKS
  • Familiarity with Spring Framework including Spring Boot.
  • Knowledge of version control systems and workflow (Git)
  • Understanding of microservices architecture, principles and patterns.
  • Familiarity with Test Driven Development and testing frameworks such as JUnit/Jupiter, Cucumber, Selenium, TestNG, Jest etc.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) concepts and experience using tools like Jenkins
  • Understanding of various web services concepts and web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript and knowledge of libraries such as React
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) including services like EC2, S3, ECS, Beanstalk etc.

Qualifications
HOW YOU CAN FIT
  • Pursuing an Undergraduate/Graduate degree in Business, Computer Science, Math, Engineering, or a related field with a graduation date between December 2024 and August 2025
  • Strong understanding of fundamental programming concepts, data structures and algorithms
  • Proficiency in Java or C++ programming language.
  • Understanding of scripting languages, such as Bash, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge of data interchange formats (e.g. XML, JSON etc.)
  • Understanding of RDBMS concepts, SQL, and database design principles
  • Understanding of messaging frameworks
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies and industry standard software development lifecycle
  • Experience using software development and testing tools
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills
