Position Statement
Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled and manual labor maintenance and program support tasks associated with maintenance of structures and facilities at Shelbyville Fish & Wildlife Area.
Job Responsibilities
1. Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled and manual labor maintenance and program support tasks associated with maintenance of structures and facilities:
• Performs maintenance and improvement projects on site grounds, trails, waterways, day use areas.
• Operates dump trucks, tractors, bush hogs, riding and hand mowers, chain saws, hand tools and weed eaters.
• Mows, performs vegetation planting and clearing.
• Applies pesticides as needed.
• Plows and shovels snow.
• Cleans and disinfects restrooms and shower buildings.
• Patches roadways.
• Operates vehicles with airbrakes with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds to haul equipment.
2. Performs semi-skilled work by performing a range of duties associated with various building trades and skilled crafts:
• Makes, maintains and installs signs.
• Makes minor repairs to plumbing, heating and air conditioning units.
• Repairs and paints picnic tables.
• Builds wooden fences.
• Installs and maintains wire boundary fences.
• Re-roofs buildings and picnic shelters.
3. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment by changing oil, fluids, filters, spark plugs and belts:
• Washes vehicles.
• Sharpens mower blades.
• Maintains site water and waste water treatment facilities.
• Maintains plant equipment, cleaning, lubricating and replacing various parts.
4. Inspects public use areas for health and safety hazards:
• Reports findings to supervisor.
• Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded visitors.
• Contacts proper authorities in the event of an emergency.
5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the state requirement for this classification.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
2. Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
3.One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
4.One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.
Employment Conditions

1. Ability to pass background check.
2. Ability to obtain pesticide applicator's license within 6 months of employment.
3. Valid and current Class A CDL Illinois Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes.
4. Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
5. Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings and grounds.
6. Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
7. Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
8. Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
Agency Statement

OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
