Position Statement
Under general direction, performs a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of Sam Parr State Park.
Job Responsibilities
1. Under general direction, performs a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of Sam Parr State Park:
• Operates trucks, tractors, bushhogs, mowers, chainsaws, hand tools, and weed eaters while engaged in maintenance and improvement projects on the site's grounds, trails, waterways, day-use
areas, lodge, and cabins
• Clears vegetation and plants new
• Plows and shovels snow
• Cleans and disinfects restrooms and shower buildings
• Patches roads
2. Assists with painting and welding of equipment:
• Creates, maintains, and installs signs
• Makes major repairs or welding to vehicles and equipment
• Paints physical structures such as lodge, cabins, restrooms, and shelters
3. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment:
• Operates and maintains vehicles and equipment by changing oil, fluids, filters, spark plugs, and belts
• Washes vehicles
• Sharpens mower blades
• Maintains site water and wastewater treatment facilities
• Maintains plant equipment by cleaning, lubricating, and replacing various parts

4. Assists with a variety of routine semi-skilled and unskilled tasks:
• Makes minor repairs to plumbing/heating/air conditioning equipment and/or electrical systems
• Builds wooden fences
• Installs & maintains wire boundary fences
• Reroofs buildings & picnic shelters
• Repairs and paints picnic tables and stoves/grills
5. Inspects public use areas and buildings:
• Reports public health and safety hazards to supervisor
• Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors
• Assures buildings and gates are properly locked
• Sells camping permits and collects fees, sells firewood
• In the event of emergencies or disturbances, contacts proper authorities
• Informs visitors of rules and regulations
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the state requirement for this classification.
1. Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery
Preferred Qualifications
1. Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing
2. One (1) year of experience in the ability to follow written and oral instructions
3. One (1) year of experience in the ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations

2. Valid driver's license
3. Ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment
4. Ability to obtain water and/or wastewater treatment operator's certificate within 6 months of employment
5. Ability to complete Prescribed Fire Training
6. Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis
7. Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds
8. Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds
9. Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain
Agency Statement
Charged with preserving, protecting, and promoting Illinois' natural resources, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) employees oversee water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites - and everything in between. The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
Work Hours: Mon. - Fri. 7:30am - 3:30pm, working every 3rd weekend, off Thurs/Fri. of that week
