Under direct supervision, repairs and maintains buildings, fixtures, equipment and regularly operates heavy equipment and functionally supervises, on an ongoing basis, lower level site workers in the maintenance and operational activities of the I&M Canal State Trail and Channahon State Park.
1. Under general direction, repairs and maintains buildings, fixtures, equipment and regularly operates heavy equipment:
- Performs semi-skilled work associated with various building trades
- Makes minor repairs to electrical/plumbing/heating/air conditioning equipment
- Reroofs and remodels buildings
2. Operates 35-foot aerial lift for the removal and pruning of trees from canal prism and hauling material to maintain trails:
- Operates tracked excavator, backhoe and skid steer in the removal of debris from the canal.
- Operates several dump trucks with air brakes and 30-foot trailer with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds to haul equipment, gravel and rock.
3. Maintains ground areas throughout the site:
- Mows grass, trims weeds on trails, rakes leaves and trims or plants shrubs and trees.
- Hauls trash from throughout the site and bathrooms.
- Plows snow and patches roads.
- Disinfects restrooms and fixtures.
- Maintains vehicles and equipment.
- Shovels snow.
4. Repairs trails along canal including signs, washouts and bridges:
- Cleans culverts and tubes.
- Maintains waste gate and water levels in canal and ponds.
5. On an intermittent or seasonal basis, provides leadership and direction to seasonal employees as well as volunteers.
6. Sells camping permits and firewood permits to the public:
- Collects attendance data and weather information.
- Prepares inventory, gas reports, etc.
7. Assists in implementing safety and security programs at the site:
- Inspects public use areas for hazards, flooding, broken equipment, fallen trees and erosion.
- Checks buildings and gates to ensure properly locked.
- Informs visitors of rules and regulations.
- Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors.
- Administers First Aid and CPR.
- In the event of emergencies or disturbances contacts proper authorities.
8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
- Requires two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
- One (1) year of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
- One (1) year of experience following written and oral instructions
- One (1) year of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations
- One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
- One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.
