Description
Pierce Transit is an independent municipal organization dedicated to fulfilling the mission of improving people's quality of life by providing safe, reliable, innovative, and useful transportation services that are locally based and regionally connected.
We are currently recruiting for reliable and conscientious Service Station Attendants to join the Fleet Maintenance team. This critical Fleet position is fast-paced and dynamic, with no two shifts ever being the same. Our Service Station Attendants need to have a strong work ethic, superior attention to detail, and high level of safety mindedness.
This full-time, benefited position will be assigned a schedule based on seniority which will likely be second or third shift initially. Please see information below for shift differential pay. Applicants should have at least two years of experience performing similar work and will be ready to take on the duties of the job to include:
  • Assist mechanics or independently perform light preventative maintenance repairs and services.
  • Fill fuel tanks with gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), or propane.
  • Be prepared for both indoor and outdoor work.
  • Take on the responsibility for safely performing all assigned work.
  • Use sound independent judgment to make decisions and take actions on assigned duties.
  • Work well with others.
  • Ensure that work standards meet and/or exceed expectations.

All of Pierce Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Pierce Transit offers two Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plans to choose from, and , as well as a matching program for 457 deferred compensation.
Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare.
Pierce Transit provides an ORCA Card benefit for each employee and a family member. This benefit provides free access to service on Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Seattle Monorail, Seattle Streetcar, King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Foot Ferry.
Shift differential:Employees are eligible for differential pay per theAmalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local #758 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Employees are eligible for differential pay when working during the following hours:
  • 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. - $1.50 per hour
  • 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. - $3.00 per hour
PAID LEAVE:
Full-time Pierce Transit employees are eligible to receive 11 paid holidays, 2 personal paid holidays, 12 days of sick leave, 12 vacation days per year, and the ability to earn up to 2 additional personal holidays by participating in a qualifying wellness activity and the annual survey. Part-time employees, receive pro-rated leave, to include sick leave, vacation, personal holiday and holiday pay. Vacation leave accrual rates increase per the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Essential Functions
The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Fills fuel tanks with gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), or propane.
  • Fills diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tanks as needed.
  • Checks engine and transmission oil, coolant, and power steering fluid levels.
  • Sweeps inside and washes both interior and exterior of vehicles as needed.
  • Removes and replaces interior vehicle seats.
  • Removes and empties cash boxes.
  • Rotates and changes vehicle tires as needed.
  • Performs minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting brakes, and servicing batteries.
  • May be required to make coach changes throughout the Pierce Transit service area.
  • Notifies the Fleet Assistant Manager of abnormal conditions such as excessive use of oils or coolant, air leaks, uneven braking or hard steering.
  • Enters work order data on Agency personal computers and on handwritten work orders.
  • Reports all damage or vandalism of vehicles to Fleet Assistant Manager.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
Other functions:
  • May assist mechanics or independently perform light preventative maintenance repairs and services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required:
  • High school graduation or equivalent and two years' experience servicing automotive or diesel equipment; or, an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.
  • A current Pierce Transit employee who has documented completion of the Service Station In-Training program is eligible for work up and meets minimum qualifications for this classification.
Licensing, Certifications, & Other Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter.
  • Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) with air brake and Intrastate passenger endorsement prior to hire.
  • Must successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter. Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • This job is considered safety sensitive, covered by the Agency's drug and alcohol program and subject to testing according to federal regulations.
  • May be required to provide basic hand tools such as pliers and screwdrivers necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment background check, pre-employment medical exam, physical ability test, and a drug and alcohol screen.

Knowledge & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of parts, tools and equipment used in servicing automotive and diesel equipment;
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions followed in automotive and equipment repair shops.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to work as a team with other employees in a directed work team environment;
  • Ability to perform computerized work order methods and procedures;
  • Ability to pass federally required drug and alcohol testing mandates; drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid WA State driver license and Intrastate Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Physical Requirements:
  • Requires climbing, standing, bending and lifting heavy objects and working in confined and enclosed spaces.
  • Must have the ability to meet the essential functions as described above including the ability to maneuver objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, work outdoors in any kind of weather, and work with soaps and various cleaning agents.
Working Conditions:
  • Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard and/or weekends likely).
  • Subject to exposure to fumes, dust and high levels of vibration.
  • Subject to exposure to high noise levels requiring ear protection.
  • Subject to working near moving parts of heavy machinery and high voltage equipment where the use of appropriate protective/safety equipment is required.
  • Subject to working at heights and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Work includes indoor and outdoor environment.

Paid Leave(1):

Insurance Plans:
Pierce Transit employees and their dependents (including domestic partners) may elect a medical (includes vision) and dental plan. Medical and dental benefits begin the first day of the month following date of hire. Public Safety Officers are not a part of the dental plan and may elect dental coverage through their Union. Employees may also participate in a flexible spending account for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Basic life insurance as well as AD&D insurance coverage is provided by the employer at no cost to the employee. Employees may elect to purchase additional coverage. Additionally, long-term disability insurance is provided by the employer at no cost to the employee in the event an employee cannot work due to a covered illness or injury (some limitations apply).
Retirement Plan:
All employees of Pierce Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare.
For those eligible employees who were previous members of the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System (TERS), continuation of participation in that system may be permitted. Those employees will be required to contribute to the Social Security System and Medicare.
Deferred Compensation Plan:
Employees are eligible to participate in a 457 savings plan with an employer match of up to 4.25% of annual compensation with increases as years of service are met.
Hours of Work:
Most Pierce Transit employees have a 40-hour workweek; however, positions may require shift work, overtime, and weekend work.
Probationary Period:
All regular employees are subject to successful completion of a probationary period of 1,040 hours, unless the position is listed as "at-will" (i.e. Transit Operator Trainee).
Public Safety Officers are subject to successful complete of a nine (9) month probationary period.
