Job Description

The Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (League) was founded in 1972 as one of the country's first state Primary Care Associations (PCAs). Established under the same federal authorizing legislation as the health center program (Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act), PCAs are organized around a set of core functions and competencies that provide a framework for support and assistance to health centers and the communities they serve. The League is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization registered as a public charity with the Commonwealth's Secretary of State. It maintains a professional staff at its headquarters in Boston and its training center in Worcester.

Position Summary:

The Senior Vice President of Development and External Affairs plays a key role in securing financial resources to support the organization's mission and growth, and represents the association externally. This position involves designing and executing fundraising strategies, cultivating donor relationships, and managing development initiatives. In addition, this leader will be the primary surrogate for the CEO and engage business groups, academic institutions, and other partners in furtherance of the mission. In the development and external roles, the leader collaborates with various stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, consultants, members and others to drive success.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including annual gala, major gifts, grants, and special campaigns, in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with individual and institutional donors. Identify and engage potential supporters, effectively communicating the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers' (MLCHC), the Institute for Health Equity Research, Evaluation & Policy's (IHE), the Connecticut River Valley Farmworker Health Program's and our health center members' impacts and funding needs.
  • Research, identify, and apply for grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies. Ensure timely submission and reporting on grant activities.
  • Oversee Membership Services, which includes the recruitment and retention for all categories of members, as well as dues, member benefits, marketing materials and corporate requirements. In addition, this department is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of all fundraising events (e.g., galas, donor appreciation events, and community outreach activities).
  • Recognize and acknowledge donors, ensuring their continued engagement and support through regular updates and appreciation efforts.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records and fundraising databases. Generate reports to track fundraising progress and analyze donor trends.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and communication team to create fundraising materials, appeals, and campaigns.
  • Develop and manage the annual development budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively, working collaboratively with finance & accounting.
  • Develop annual and multi-year fundraising goals for the organizations with input from key staff.
  • Stay informed about fundraising regulations and ensure the organization's fundraising practices comply with legal requirements.
  • Attend events in the Greater Boston area, in order to cultivate new donor relationships, and occasionally join the President & CEO and other senior leadership at functions.
  • Serve as a representative of the organization at Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, New England Council, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, Black Economic Council of Massachusetts, Associated Industries of Massachusetts, et al. meetings.
  • Build and maintain the infrastructure for a development department, including prospective staff positions, policies, procedures and systems.

Competencies/Skills:

  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles and strategies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency and/or aptitude in using fundraising software and tools and setting key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Sound financial acumen, including budget management, financial forecasting, and resource allocation
  • Familiarity with ethical fundraising practices and adherence to industry standards, including donor privacy and transparency
  • An orientation towards working collaboratively with other departments, including program staff, finance, and marketing
  • Dedication to Upholding and Embodiment of the Organization's Mission and Core Values

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in fundraising or development; or transferable skills that will contribute to a successful and effective transition into the role

At the Mass League we work every day to create an inclusive culture that embraces all forms of diversity in order to ensure all staff members feel a sense of belonging. In addition, we support and foster our community health center members in providing equitable care and treatment to all patients and staff. We encourage you to apply only if working at this kind of organization would be a good fit for you.
