As a part of Iron Mountain's Project Matterhorn and ongoing enterprise growth agenda, the Warehouse & Logistics and Consumer & Specialty Storage businesses have become a priority and focal area given their significant growth opportunity and potential. Iron Mountain now is seeking a seasoned and experienced executive to lead and significantly grow both business lines. Serving in a newly created role as the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Warehouse, Logistics and Specialty Storage ("SVP and GM"), this individual
will own the P&L for both businesses with full strategic, commercial, operational and financial responsibilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy:
- The SVP and GM must build a strategy for both businesses based on category growth, opportunity and fit
within IRM. The strategies should be informed by appropriate market intelligence and focus on building
capabilities and needs to enable pursuit of high growth.
- For W&L, selected storage categories such as healthcare, manufacturing, defense, aerospace and retail, as
well as secure logistics, present great opportunities in addition to considering future geographies where
they may choose to expand the IRM W&L presence.
- For Consumer Storage, the SVP and GM will focus on categories such as valet storage, self-storage, mobile
door-to-door storage units and partner channels in North America to start.
- The SVP and GM shall create and execute a three-year strategy for both businesses focused on going "BIG,'
where appropriate, using the power of the IRM Enterprise for support to achieve their goals.
Go To Market:
- The SVP and GM must be experienced in building a high-production commercial construct(s) connecting all
the necessary upstream components (market intelligence, product innovation, marketing, sales, etc.) into
one fluid commercial motion capable of producing the needed organic growth.
- The leader must have experience in selling through multiple channels (B2B for W&L and B2C for Consumer)
and have a level of expertise on how to best measure, manage and make the needed adjustments
pertaining to increasing growth, maintaining and improving customer experience for both businesses and
making it very easy to do business through product and technology enhancements.
Position Summary Iron Mountain
- Ultimately, the SVP and GM shall be capable of understanding why customers buy a service(s), why they do
not and how to make adjustments from a data-based perspective.
Financial:
- The SVP and GM will own both the W&L and Consumer Storage P&L. This leader will be the primary driver
of both organic and inorganic growth and must have a strong understanding of both income statements and
balance sheets.
- Additionally, M&A experience is needed for the purpose of (a) improving the IRM market position, (b)
expanding into new geographies and (c) potentially expanding into new growth opportunities such as selfstorage
and mobile unit door-to-door for consumer and then third-party logistics (3PL) partners and unserved verticals in W&L.
- Additionally, the SVP and GM must be capable of driving the appropriate EBITDA and ROI expectations as
well as making the needed adjustments along the journey.
- The leader should firmly understand all the pertinent leading indicators of both businesses and have a firm
grasp of the unit economics and key metrics that drive top-line and bottom-line growth.
Leadership:
- The SVP and GM must be an enabler, fostering a culture of great talent, accountability and strong
communication. The leader must build a strong team and have a critical eye toward talent that is bold,
forward-thinking and innovative.
- The leader must have a cohesive team that not just understands the strategy and roadmap but owns it and
plays a role in the next evolution or revolution of growth, performance and contribution.
- The SVP and GM must be capable of extending high accountability along with high rewards and recognition
for the team’s performance.
- It will be critical to establish consistent internal communications channels allowing key senior team leaders
to stay well connected to the appropriate senior executives in terms of gaining support and partnering to
achieve the collective goals.
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
20+ years of experience in general management, operations and commercial leadership roles
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned general manager and business leader with a track record of driving
double-digit growth rates within complex, multi-faceted, related business of comparable or larger scale. They
will have the organizational experience and skill to successfully define a new role, team and strategy,
collaborating to navigate across a global, complex environment. The ideal candidate will bring cross-functional
leadership experience in scaled environments with P&L responsibility of at least $200 million.
Warehouse and logistics industry experience
The ideal candidate will have previous executive leadership experience in asset-based warehouse, logistics and
distribution business with a strong preference for 3PL company experience. Additionally, experience in secure,
white glove, specialty storage and services is preferred. Experience in the United States is required. Experience
in markets outside the United States is beneficial, particularly in the United Kingdom.
Strategic transformation and growth
Experience driving strategic and organizational transformation and growth. Demonstrated capability in building
and scaling organizations commercially and operationally while successfully navigating organizational
complexity. Strong commercial and financial acumen with a natural tendency for growth, both organic and
inorganic. Experience with mergers and acquisitions, particularly integrating acquired organizations such as
operations, people, financials and technology effectively.
Seasoned leader and team builder
A proven leader with executive presence, business acumen and influencing skills. Develops key talent and holds
people accountable while recognizing and rewarding achievements. An excellent people manager with proven
ability to build and lead large, geographically distributed teams effectively in a matrix environment. Comfortable
working with teams across multiple geographies, cultures and customs and international regulatory
environments.
Entrepreneurial and solutions-oriented
High degree of entrepreneurship with a strong bias for action and results. Brings a creative mindset and
solutions-orientation. Ability to drive new strategies and initiatives forward to successful conclusion.
